By Maria Asslin-Roy, Staff Reporter n Friday, September 10" at the university fraternity village at UBC, the annual “Welcome back Barbeque” was hosted. However, the party got a little more out of hand than last year. Approximately 1,000 people attended on Friday night, where people’s personal goods got stolen or damaged including laptops, stereos, televisions, even property and cars. As to be expected with this many attendees, the cops showed up and reported “incredible numbers of individuals that were extremely intoxicated, and in some cases, they were minors.” On Saturday as reported, the party scene got even crazier. Police were called into the premises to find about 15 males physically fighting with each other. Once the police got involved they were assaulted as well. Later in the evening two male students were arrested for being drunk in public. Also, at least one other student was arrested for being so intoxicated he almost reached a point of unconsciousness. Police are saying that these parties are becoming a “systematic problem” and students need to become a little more responsible Two Day Frat Party at UBC by Maria Asselin-Roy, Staff Reporter when it comes to drinking to the point of unconsciousness. Police say that they still want university students to have fun, but to please remember to drink responsibly and ensure no one gets injured. = | Re By Maria Asslin-Roy, Staff Reporter f you’re on a break from class or if you’re looking for a good study atmosphere with a great cup of coffee, Cornerstone Cafe is about a five minute walk from the David Lam campus. Gala planned for Burns Bog By Tim Drake, News Editor or close to 22 years now, the Burns Bog conservation society has been doing their best to raise awareness about the importance of the bog and to protect it from destruction. One of the key dates on the society’s calendar is the annual Burns Bog Gala. The 2010 edition of the event will be held on Friday, September 24" at Eaglequest, Coyote Creek in Surrey to continue awareness for the 40 square kilometre bog that covers a vast amount of territory in Delta. The feature attraction of the evening will be guest speaker Ray Zahab, a noted motivational speaker who is known for his feats of distance running. Along with a keynote speech from Zahab, who once trekked across the entire Sahara Desert in a race in which he placed first in the 7, 500 kilometre journey, gala goers will also receive a dinner. Tickets for the event run at $75 per person, and a silent auction will also be conducted at the event. Over the years, the Burns Bog conservation society has been in several high profile battles with developers in their fight against industrial expansion of the bog. Their most highly publicized scrap came against developers seeking to construct a massive deep-sea port at the bog that would have seen over a mile of the bog destroyed had the project commenced. Today, the conservation society regularly runs educational seminars and workshops designed to raise more awareness about the significance of the bog and the need to continue to defend it. Tickets to the gala are can be purchased by calling the conservation society at 604-572-0373 or by visiting their website at burnsbog.org/gala.
