Streaking success Colour Bug hair shadow put the awesome in temporary hair colour By Sharon Miki ver since the day I started crimping B= plastic hair of my Malibu Skipper, I’ve been obsessed with changing my look. Unfortunately, because I’m also as noncommittal as a bachelor on The Bachelor, | try to avoid radical permanent changes to my appearance. But I still crave change. What to do? With this in mind, I was intrigued by the new Kevin Murphy Colour Bug hair shadow: like eye shadow, these palm-sized compacts offer bright pops of powdered colour that can be swiped on and washed off. Selling for $20 a pop, the Bugs are available in pink, purple, and orange. For my dark brown hair, I decided to try out the pink. Applied directly to dry hair, the fuchsia colour was subtle but still noticeable. Blondes beware though: the colour can be super vibrant against a light canvas. Application was easy—you just grab a lock of hair and rub, rub, rub. A few tips? Hair should be completely dry or the colour won’t take. For longer- lasting results, pat a small amount of hair oil or serum to the locks you want to shade (I used Moroccan oil). Also, while the pigment is surprisingly stable, it’s not perfect when it comes to rub off. I slept with the Bug colour in, and awoke to a faint pink tinge on my white pillowcase. As such, I wouldn’t recommend this for your wedding day if you're wearing ivory. Overall, I'd recommend the Colour Bug hair shadow because it’s a fun and easy way to change your look if you’re looking for a temporary transformation— while allowing you to still look professional for a job interview the next day. However, this is not the best choice if you’re looking to make a big or enduring change: twenty dollars isn’t cheap on a student’s budget, and with regular use you’d use up the Bug pretty fast. Doc Martens; blending fashion with functionality By Stephanie Trembath, Life & Style Editor hen I was a kid, mom owned a pair of chunky black leather Doc Martens that she wore everywhere, much to my dismay. Why she insisted upon wearing combat lace up boots rather than a pair of modest flats was always totally beyond me, and I recall running ahead with my sisters in grocery stores rather than be seen trotting alongside those ridiculous boots. Who knew that in my adult years it would become the one fashion item I lusted after; I’ve gotten used to my mom’s constant “I told you so.” Doc Martens, possibly one of the best shoes to invest in as this footwear combines fashion with functionality, is a trendy brand that kick started their popularity in Great Britain. It rains nearly as much in Britain as it does in Vancouver, so a pair of rubber soled shoes is worth your while for the school year. In 2010 Doc Martens won two awards at the Spring Fashion Awards in NYC, which has allowed for this particular boot to be worn with just about everything from dresses to tight pants, skirts and shorts. Perfect for students as these boots are comfortable, waterproof, and iconic to fashion, the brand was originally designed by a German doctor serving in World War II. The doctor, Klaus Martens, decided to improve the standard army boots that became incredibly uncomfortable after injury, and so the soft leather with air padded soles were added to the military style lace-up shoe. The addition of air pads allowed for what Marten called “bouncing soles” for more comfort and cushioning. When Marten designed his boots, the traditional style was dark black with yellow lining, but today since the boot is featured on the catwalk, the simple shoe has various altered styles. Hot pink, floral patterns, and neon yellow are a few of the trendy twists designers have taken on the designer boot, however, lots of designers opt to keep the dark leather and simple lace-up style as well. Where can you buy your own Martens? Well, if you prefer vintage, check out F as in Frank on Main Street or try Value Village. To find the original style, Urban Outfitters on Granville carries the boot in black, and frequently restocks alternating colors such as navy blue, forest green, yellow, and even hot pink. Also on Granville Street and new to the block, Zelen Shoes carries Doc Martens for both men and women in black and brown. The Martens from vintage stores will range in price, but the pairs from Urban Outfitters and Zelen Shoes start at $129. If you have a little bit more money to spend, Madewell and Nordstrom both carry various versions of Martens for $200. If you’re anything like me, you’ ll continue the hunt for the perfect pair at Value Village. life anaStyie Fashion fix: versatile clothing for all year-round By Stephanie Trembath, Life & Style Editor egardless of what time of year it R: there are a few wardrobe pieces that will carry you through the entire year without having to invest in new season specific items. Instead of constantly updating your wardrobe and splurging on $30 - $40. Payless Shoes has great tennis flats for $29. Boyfriend tees; these baggy t-shirts are the ultimate in saving and creating your fashion forward outfit. In warm weather they go perfectly tucked into shorts with a skinny belt, and in the winter worn over tights, skinny jeans, or layered under cardigans or vests. American Apparel has a ton of “Plain black leggings or tights are another fashion must have; perfect to throw on with a baggy shirt and low scrunchy bun when you’re running late and don’t feel like wearing pajamas to school.” trendy accessories, invest in a few staple items that can be adjusted and reworked all year round. To ensure your wardrobe is sustainable and chic make sure you have at least one pair of regular wash jeans, and one pair of skinny jeans in darker denim. Lighter wash jeans are good for casual affairs, but navy or black cigarette pants are easily dressed up for fancy dinners in the winter (and can even be rolled up for the classic Aubrey Hepburn cropped pants look in warmer weather). Plain black leggings or tights are another fashion must have; perfect to throw on with a baggy shirt and low scrunchy bun when you’re running late and don’t feel like wearing pajamas to school. Your next step is making sure you have a pair of chunky heels, again for more dressy events, and either a) ballerina flats or b) tennis shoes. Flats are absolutely necessary; especially if you take public transit. I personally prefer tennis shoes paired with ankle socks; you can really play up the sock pattern here to add some spice to a plain outfit. Keds sneakers are on sale right now at Spank on Granville Street; white, washed grey, and navy blue with yellow stitching are all on for half price between boyfriend baggy tees in V-neck or scoop- neck choices, but I recommend checking vintage or consignment stores for more original designs. Other than baggy tees, buying fitted shirts in black, white, navy, and grey can allow you to change up your outfit without really having to think (giving you more time to focus on accessories and shoes). Superstore is the best place to shop for plain shirts, with Joe Fresh brand t-shirts for under $15. Finally, the last few staple fashion items worth splurging on that are versatile enough to wear throughout the entire year: blazers, simple cardigans, and little black dresses. A darker blazer in charcoal, navy, or black, is more flexible to adapt to all seasons, while white, caramel, and grey are too light for the winter months. I would recommend purchasing a cardigan in a soft pastel or a more vibrant colour of your own preference to make a statement; just avoid trendy colours. Last year bright green and sunset orange were worn on the catwalk, but this year turquoise and plum purple are the colours of choice. For this reason a softer tone or a bright shade you personally prefer is best. Finally, for those last minute soirees, your little black dress is the best quick fix.
