Feb. 28, 1:30-3pm Call 527-5472 Last month, the Foundation’s Mark Crozet (left) and Lou Rene Legge of the Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness (centre right) said goodbye to Athletics Development Officer Dave Heel (centre left), who has now left his two bosses to work for Orca Bay. Replacing Dave is Brian Tait (right), already known around campus for coaching men’s basketball. A former UBC varsity team captain, Tait is a welcome addition to the Crozet/ Legge team, and is now hard at work organizing the College’s Summer Sports Camps. Well, well, well... Briefly Help homeless youth DCSS Social Service Rep Robert Bates is asking the College community to help young people in the Downtown Eastside. The Youth Action Centre (YAC), a drop-in for 13-24-year-olds, provides temporary shelter, food and other assistance to help homeless youth keep safe and warm in the cold weather. YAC needs donations of gloves, toques, scarves, sleeping bags and winter jackets. If you can help, contact Bates at 527- 5110 or drop items off at the Student Society office. Personnel hours For the Winter Semester, David Lam Campus Personnel hours will only be held on Wednesdays. Masterful leave Marie Bell of Psychiatric Nursing had a very busy and productive educational leave during the 1996/97 academic year. After three years of part-time study, she was able tc complete her post-graduate course work, field study and synthesis paper at the University of Oregon, Eugene Campus. In the fall of 1996, she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Educational Development It was smiles and t-shirts all ‘round on January 19 as Douglas College employees were recognized for completing the 1997 Wellness Challenge sponsored by the Centre for Sport, Recreation & Wellness. Participants showed their attitude with a capital “A” by completing a range of wellness activities from swimming to yoga to learning a new skill. Feeling good might be its own reward, but congratulations to all for joining in this ground-breaking project. Plans are underway for more initiatives throughout 1998. and Program Management, with a speciality focus in Addictions. During her leave, she also completed a certificate course in substance abuse prevention and developed a course on addictions for her department’s Advanced Diploma Program. Congratulations to Bell for her substantial achievements, and stay tuned for more educational leave updates next month. Sechelt cabin Take a break on the beautiful Sunshine Coast! First Nations film kudos “Forgotten Warriors,” a film about Aboriginal Veterans directed by Loretta Todd and featuring a ceremony performed at the New Westminster Campus, has been nominated for a Genie award for Best Short Documentary of 1997. First Nations Services Coordinator Betsy Bruyere attended the film’s premiere January 15, and reports that the students appearing in the film pay great tribute to the veterans. A video version of “Forgotten Warriors” is available through A/V Services in the Library. Batke's beaming Adminstration’s Ginny Batke is pleased to announce the safe arrival of her newest grandson, Andrew James, born December 24 in Tofino. This 11 lb. Christmas present makes it four boys in a row for Ginny, who last celebrated the birth of a grandson on New Year’s Eve, 1996! Karanga thanks you On behalf of the Karanga Primary School Project, Geography’s Liz Peerless extends many thanks to all who helped decorate the “Donation Tree” in the concourse last month. The $853 raised (plus $304 in external donations) has been sent to Moshi, Tanzania to purchase building materials needed for classroom completion. A healthy win Winner of the December 60/ 40 payroll draw is Marion Greenwood of General Nursing, who takes home $805.20 while student assistance increases by $536.80. Karen Esau of the Foundation (local 5876) conveys thanks to everyone who participated in the payroll draw last year, and to the 45 employees who gave through payroll deductions. Video-conference coup In December, Northern Telecom conducted a corporate training program using the Douglas College video-conference facility. While 200 personnel gathered in the Performing Arts Theatre, 500 joined them through technology hooked up to Ontario, the UK, Georgia and Texas. Bruce Clarke of DLS coordinated efforts with Nortel, and contributed digital camera shots to the conference proceedings. Whistler getaway Get away to a log home in Whistler! Staff changes In Student Development, Colleen Romano has moved to Student Placement, while Dave Seaweed is back for eight months as Student Services Clerk. Patricia Roos is the new Instructional Facilitator for Career and Employment Preparation, while Tina Vandermark takes on the same title for Consumer and Job Preparation. Congratulations to new permanent BC Benefits staff Sarah Bertin (Peer Services) and Jan Hastings (Transition Facilitator). In Systems & Computing, Jun Clement is now Computer Tech/Help Desk, as Piotr Kisiel replaces Mark Coumont as Manager, Computing Support Services. In Learning Resources, Doreen Dubreuil moves into Collection Control as Jacquie Tickner becomes Circulation/Intercampus Assistant. Health Sciences welcomes Barb Hill as Departmental Assistant, as Carmen Mahood becomes the new “DA” over in Humanities and Social Sciences. Val Lynch has moved to Accounts Payable in Finance, while Judy Day takes on Accounts Payable in Purchasing. In the Registrar’s Office, Academic Advisor Anne Dijk becomes an NWC “regular” (she’ll stay in Coquitlam until May, however). Suzanne Korelus is now Records Supervisor, Shelly Graff and Marilyn Oliver are now Information Systems Assistants, Gail Johnson is Admissions Clerk and Colleen Bradley is Records Clerk.
