INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE/NOVEMBER 29, 1988 Athletic Update Men’s Hockey: The Royals didn’t hang on to their 6th place in the Na- tional Rankings for long, losing to BCIT 6-3 at Four Rinks last Satur- day night. BCIT’s rough game upproach resulted in 52 penalty minutes being handed out by the of- ficial to BCIT, and 32 stitches in the face of Douglas’ Jamic Borkowski, for which no penalty was given. However, the power play wasn’t working for Douglas as ex-Douglas goalie Paul Tucker stopped everything but 3 shots from Steve Adrain, Shawn Hokan- son, and Frank Pakodzy. Next league game is against Trinity Westem University, December 3 at Port Moody Arena, Men’s Basketball: The Royals lost 59-72 to the Alumni on Friday night, as some of Douglas’ best returned to show their old coach what they hadn't forgotten. Brent Henderson, Andrew Conway, Steven Milton, Brian England and Chris Terris (to name a few) played for Douglas during the 1986 4th place finish at the National Cham- pionships, and still play pretty good basketball. Present Royals scoring came from Glen Cote - 18 points, Chris Schrick - 9 points, and Sean Beasley - 9 points. The Royals had a better day Saturday, defeating the UBC Jv's 96-55. Glen Cote had 19 points, Phil Taplcey 13, and Jason Wubbs 11 points. Wrestling: Results of the Dinosaur Open, November 12 in Calgary, Alberta: Corey Kwak 150 Ibs. Women’s Basketball: Douglas College Women’s Basketball team played two hard-fought games on the weekend, and lost both by a total of 3 points. Friday night saw this year’s team face off against the Douglas College Alumni, a line-up which included a front line of 671" Kim Phipps, 5°11" Sharlene Jeffer- son, and former All-Canadian 5°11" Becky Watson. Alumni also had plenty of speed at guard with Kathleen Knight, Lorctta Isaac, and Cara Goose, not to mention Lor- raine Marken, another former All-Canadian. Royals led by 1 at the half, 29-28, but never extended their lead by morc than 6 in the second half. With less than 3 seconds remaining, and Douglas College up 65-64, Alumni Becky Watson hit a turnaround jumper from 10 fect to win the game for the Alumni 66-65. Andrea Jackson had 22 for Royals. On Saturday, Royals faced off against a strong UBC JV’s team, and despite being shorthanded and having only 2 guards, being presscd full-court the entire game, Royals stayed within 10, closing to 2 with their own press in the last minutes of the game. Royals had the last shot of the game, a pressured lay- up, that bounced on the rim and could not be controlled by either team as time ran out. UBC JV’s tri- umphed 66-64 in an extremely rough game, made so by no profes- sional referees appearing, and only one (inexperienced) UBC staff per- son taking on the job. Andrea Jackson led with 23 points, fol- lowed by Claudia Zamprogno with 16.
