Library lends support in Uganda The Douglas College Library is teaming up with the Coquitlam Library to “twin” with a village library in Uganda. The local College and City libraries will provide support to the Ugandan library. “Tt costs about $3,000 to operate a library in Uganda for one year,” says Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) instructor Nancy Newman, who is helping coordinate the project, called Library to Library. The CSSW Program has been involved in social service work in Uganda for three years. Library to Library has grown out of the program's connections in Uganda, explains Newman. “This project promotes connections in the community and literacy. It's amazing the difference a library can make in a little village. It’s really a community centre,” says Newman. The campus libraries are hosting a Library to Library fundraiser on November 14. Highlights include a reading by Philosophy instructor and author Leonard Angel. Kate Parry, an English professor at Hunter College in New York City and a part-time resident of Uganda, will do a presentation on community libraries in Uganda. From October 28-November 18, the Douglas Library will also have a “fundraising blitz,” with on-site donation jars and a book sale, says Director Carole Compton- Smith. During that time, fine collections will be put into the fund too. The Library to Library fundraiser starts at 7pm on November 14 at the New Westminster Campus Boardroom. There will be a cash bar, snacks and lively conversation about the differences a library can make in a small African village. The suggested donation is $20. If you are unable to attend and wish to make a donation, please contact Nancy Newman at newmann@ douglas.be.ca or Carole Compton-Smith at compton- smithc@douglas.bc.ca Re-gift for a good cause Have you received a gift that is perfect — for someone else? Christmas Hampers are back with a new format The Financial Aid Office will coordinate Christmas Hampers for needy student families again this year — with a twist. “Due to the tremendous support of the College community, the Christmas Hamper program has grown in size along with the work involved,” says Patty Lewis, financial aid and placement supervisor. “Organizers are introducing changes that, with participants’ help, will make the program sustainable,” she adds. This year a $100 gift card for groceries will replace food items. This allows students to purchase exactly what they need for their families and eliminates storage and transportation problems. The hamper must be small enough to transport on public transit. By limiting the hamper to one item of clothing and one wrapped gift per child, the hamper should be small enough to fit into a gift bag. To ensure every student receives his or her hamper, there should be one contact person in each department that adopts a family. The student will be given that person’s contact information so they can arrange a convenient time to pick up the hamper directly from the department. If the student needs help with transportation due to the size of the hamper, it will be up to the department to arrange help. Financial Aid will identify students who need a little extra help from its bursary applicants and will provide gift suggestions. “We also want to thank Nancy Walker in the -CARE program for coordinating hampers last year and to everyone who continued to provide support to families in our community,” says Lewis. If your department would like to sponsor a student family this year, please contact either Marie Anweiler 604-527-5106 or Patty Lewis 604-527-5105.
