Sonja Alton, Roger Jones, Michael Milner, Trudy Montgomery and Penny Parry have had their terms extended to January 31, 2002. ¢ Thank you and farewell to Len Millis, faculty representative, who completed his three year term and Dennis Lancien, student representative, who completed his one year term, effective August 31. Welcome to their replacements Susan Ashcroft, faculty, and Edward Inoue, student, effective September 1, 2001. Briefly Babies and brides Proud Grandmother Kathleen Wallden of Child, Family and Community Studies is happy to announce the birth of her first grandchild, Matthew Alexander Kasper, on August 4th, weighing 8lbs 4ozs. Congratulations! Heather Scott of the Foundation delivered her second son, Eric Cameron Scott, August | at 11:59am. It was reportedly a fast and furious labour, with Heather and husband Jeff making it to the hospital just in time (she almost gave birth in the hallway). Weighing in at 6lbs 150z, Eric is a little brother for Cairan, their two year old son. Incidentally, Heather delivered on her due date, which prompted Karen Esau of the Foundation to remark “I think she must have put this on her TO DO list in her daytimer for August Ist!” Mike Proud of Finance has an appropriate name for this occasion: he is the proud daddy of baby daughter Olivia who entered the world Saturday, August 4 and weighed in at 8 lbs. Congratulations! Jen Whitlock of the Registrar's Office had a baby boy named Benjamin Matthew Whitlock on July 3, weighting 8 lbs 3 ozs, while Lita Cole, also of the Registrar’s Office (CE), gave birth to son Eamon on July 18, weighting 9 lbs 2ozs. Congratulations! Congratulations to Erika Nielsen of the Consumer and Job Preparation Program who will become Erika Loucks this Fall when she marries Todd Loucks on October 6! Carla Elm, Learning Centre Services Coordinator at the New Westminster Campus, tied the knot with Jun Clement, formerly of Systems and Computing, on July 14 in New Westminster. Following the wedding the two spent a week honeymooning in Mexico. Carla reports that “the wedding was lovely and Mexico was magical.” Congratulations to you both! David Lam Campus chemistry lab instructor Celia Ching was married to Marcus Lau, also a chemist, on July 15 at Richmond’s Minoru Chapel. The wedding banquet was held at Fook Yuen Palace Restaurant in Richmond, with attendance by many of the Chemistry department employees. Big screen, big sound Tom Childs of the Library invites everyone to attend the next Video Cafe, Friday September 21, 4-9pm in the Douglas Room. “The topic of this Cafe is IMF/World Bank,” says Childs. “Viewers will learn about the devastating policies that the IMF/ World Bank impose on cash strapped, developing countries with their bail-out loans and the strings attached.” This popular educational-social evening, hosted by the DCFA and the DSU with organizational support from the Library, features films, the folky-jazzy Celtic sounds of Burton & Craib and conversation. Psych update The Psychology Department is pleased to announce two new regular faculty: Dr. Don Meen and Dr. Shelley Moore. Also in Psychology, instructor Kathy Denton (and co-author Dennis Krebs) just had a paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Adult Development. It is called Interpersonal moral conflicts between couples: Effects of type of dilemma, role, and partner's judgments on level of moral reasoning and Kathy expects it to be published in the Fall. Marketing Mania September 26 marks the first-ever event of the Douglas College Marketing Student Society, Marketing Mania. Held on the first floor of the Students Union building, Marketing Mania runs from 4-6pm and hosts speakers from all working professions of the marketing industry, as well as representatives from various professional organizations attending to answer student questions. “The goal of the event is to better educate new students and some high school students on the benefits of choosing Marketing as a career,” says Society President Brooke Sherwood. In Systems & Computing, Mary Hatch replaces Jim Chliboyko, who is ona one-year leave, as the new Publication and Documentation Specialist.
