INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / APRIL 18, 1989 © Legion Helps Maple Ridge Students Students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are getting some help from their friends. Maple Ridge Branch #88 of the Royal Canadian Legion has established a $25,000 bursary fund with the Douglas College Foundation to provide revenue for annual bursaries for students from that area. The fund will be matched by the provincial government. Interest earned on the Endow- ment Fund will be used to provide one or more bursaries every year to students in finan- cial need, says Randi Duke, Executive Director of the Douglas College Foundation. With the growth in the Maple Ridge population and the expan- sion of Douglas College programs, Duke says there are increasing numbers of students who need financial aid. The Douglas College Founda- tion hopes to raise $470,000 by 1990 to build a $1 million En- dowment Fund to provide bursaries for students who need financial assistance. The Foun- dation relies on support from businesses and community groups like the Maple Ridge Branch #88 Royal Canadian Legion. 20th Anniversary Continued the Royal Avenue side, a complex outside the theatre foyer, and an additional floor above the library," explains Gilgan. Earlier this year, the College received permission to buy land in Maple Ridge for a joint facility with the Maple Ridge School District. "The expansions are just now becoming concrete," says Gilgan. "We expect further announcements any day." Despite the changes past and present, Gilgan says something at Douglas College has remained intact. “We're still an institution dedicated to helping meet the needs of the community. We’re still fulfilling our original mandate to provide a comprehensive college to the community. That hasn’t changed." Branch #88 spokesman Ronald Stevenson says legion- naires have been long-time supporters of post-secondary education. "We understand there are over 500 students in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows area registered at Douglas College," says Stevenson. "We wanted to help them out." Stevenson says the money for the Endowment Fund was raised through bingo. The Legion has contributed about $15,000 towards student bursaries at other post-secondary institutions.
