GRANTS-IN-AID ANNOUNCEMENT Since 1960 one-year seeding grants (up to $15,000) have been awarded by the Scientific Advisory Council to DISCUS for alcohol research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Nearly 400 separate pro- jects at more than 200 universities and research centres, primarily in the U.S. and Canada, have focused on the biochemistry, physiology and pharma- cology of ethanol, as well as on psy- chological and sociological dimensions of the normal, customary use of bever- age alcohol and the consequences of excessive drinking and alcoholism. This announcement affirms the con- tinuing interest of the distilled spir- its industry in supporting such re- search. Awards are made by the Sci- entific Advisory Council on the basis of scientific merit. Grantees re- serve the right of inquiry and publi- cation in the media of their choice. Applications are reviewed quarterly. The Council continues to accept pro- posals on the basis of the applicants' choice of subject(s). In addition, the Council also accepts applications for the following specific topics: 1 - Relationship between alcohol con- sumption patterns and human health and longevity. 2 - Effects of alcohol on fetal devel- opment. 3 - Role of alcohol in neuropsychiat- ric disorders. 4 - Role of alcohol in cirrhosis of the liver. 5 - Alcohol and traffic safety, includ- ing relations between BAC, various population categories, fatalities and driver risk factors. 6 - Effects of control measures on al- cohol-related health problems. 7 - Adolescent drinking. 8 - Genetic factors and alcohol con- sumption patterns in various pop- ulations.
