THORSDAY, JULY 4, 1985 1 CARE TUTORING Chances are, everyone in Canada knows at least one English speaking adult who ® is unable to read or write the language. According to Statistics Canada, one out of every 25 adults in this country have five years or less of formal school ing. Eileen Bowcott, coordinator of the | CARE adult tutoring program at Douglas College, can see the problems illiteracy creates and she realizes how difficult they are to solve. "It's not easy to recognize an illiterate adult," she says. "Most adults who are unable to read or write are self conscious, and they hide their illiteracy quite well." To help these people, Bowcott likes to go into the community and inform adults from all walks of life where they can go to receive the skills that are essential in today's society. People who do not read or write will probably never admit their problem to someone close to them, and are more apt to talk to a professional like © the tutors in her program she says.
