Douglas receives standing ovation Douglas College received a Standing Ovation Award from the BC Rehab Foundation for efforts focusing on accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. The award, created in 2001, honours BC individuals and organizations that have “gone the extra mile” to improve accessibility. Winners are nominated and selected by an advisory committee comprised of people with physical disabilities. Douglas College was lauded for its mission to Serving up support The roth-annual A Class Act was the best ever in terms of attendance, auction items and money raised. The fundraiser, held at the David Lam Campus on November 16, attracted 340 guests from the Tri-City and New Westminster areas, and raised $38,000 for student aid. Hotel and Restaurant Management students worked with the Foundation to create an evening to remember. The event included a seminar on beer, as well as tastings of wine, beer, chocolate and gourmet balsamic vinegars. build accessibility into the planning process to ensure that everyone — students and employees — can participate fully in the life of the College. Students receive national scholarship awards Four exceptional students received top scholarship awards at the November 15 Douglas College Board meeting at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam. Kerry K. Chutter, Sheena Dalrymple and Carol-Anne Roark all received awards of $4,000 from the Canada Millennium Scholarship National In-Course Awards program. Robert Austin received $8,000 from the Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship award. ‘The National In-Course Awards are merit-based scholarships awarded by the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. They are available to current students, who demonstrate the qualities of leadership and are a positive force in the both the community and classroom. The Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship is awarded to a college student who displays passion for their studies and a desire to contribute positively to their community.
