¢ Thursday, September 24 It’s a party on Granville Street this Thursday with Gaslight Anthem playing the Commodore and Holy Fuck playing the Venue. Two equally good concerts and split only by the vehicle lane make this area of town a good place to be. My first recommendation would be Anthem, but go for the cursed ones if your college budget is an issue. ¢ Friday, September 25 An Amazing night of Live music in Vancouver when GM place hosts ‘90s rockers Pearl Jam on their “We’re still kickin’” tour. If grunge ain’t your thing, you’re more than welcome to step back a generation and experience a night of punk rock at the Commodore Ballroom hosted by D.O.A. and SNFU. Both events are noteworthy, but for my money, it’s the Canadian punk that wins me over this time. ¢ Saturday, September 26 The Cobalt hotel hosts Chris Walter’s book release party featuring The Subhumans. Loud punk rock, cheap beer, and good company are to be expected along with book signings and selections read from his most recent novel. Remember, the Cobalt is under heavy threat of being shut down, get there and pay your respects before this place no longer exists. ¢ Sunday, September 27 Local jazzer and Cap College instructor Brad Turner brings his quartet to The Cellar jazz club on Broadway for a two-night gig on Saturday and Sunday. When it comes to good local jazz, it doesn’t get much better than this. Call ahead to make a reservation; cover is $10 or free for students. The Subhumans \ ‘Kanye West doesn’t care about white people By Jay Schreiber, Arts Editor catchy riff? You’re trying too hard to make yourself known to everyone that you aren’t paying any attention to your “craft,” a phrase I use loosely. h, Kanye, when will you learn? Your O=s antics are frowned upon by the general public and despite your record sales, you’re a piece of garbage! Your most recent antic would have been 10 times worse if it were your first offense, but nay, another stupid move by Mr. West to grab attention and act a fool. The last time you made a moron of yourself was by stating that Bush doesn’t care about black people in response to the government’s lack of involvement with the Katrina disaster. Poor Mike Meyers was so baffled that he hasn’t starred in a good movie since! At the MTV music awards, Kanye was upset at Taylor Swift’s victory over his friend Beyonce, so much so that he stood up from his seat, walked on stage, grabbed the microphone and let everyone in the auditorium and television audience know about it: “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” he shrieked while Swift looked on, obviously confused. Kanye, is this compensation for your boring and dull music that wouldn’t survive without a Every chance you get there’s conflict in your words and belligerence in your actions, and that really grinds my gears. Beyonce, for once, is the non-offender. She was put on the spot and tried hard to play along in this tough situation. I’ve entertained the theory that this was set up by the two pop culture icons, but it was definitely played off as a spur-of-the-moment action. Publicity stunts get old and are forgotten about within six months of their happening much like the bulk of Kanye’s career. Mr. West, you fail as a pop star. Michael Jackson never had to do anything stupid, it was the media that picked apart his faults. The Beatles never went out of their way to do something moronic in a grab for attention, they used their words and music and, unlike Kanye’s songs, they actually had content and purpose. After getting kicked out of the MTV award show, Kanye wandered around Hollywood looking for people to brag to. Imma let you finish... but Tm one of the biggest jackasses of all time!
