Douglas College Librarians: Who’s Who? In its New Westminster and David Lam campus libraries and Thomas Haney Centre extension services, Douglas College employs a total of nine full- and part-time librarians as well as one director. Working with the 27 paraprofessional and clerical employees that make up the rest of the Learning Resources team, they provide a wide range of specialized services to library users. So who’s who and what do they do? Read on... Public Service Librarians All public service librarians spend 15 to 20 hours a week in direct student contact, either assisting students and faculty with library use and research at the Information Desk, or teaching classes and workshops on research skills. After all, helping people learn how to learn is what they're all about. In addition to their student contact time, here’s where the information wizards of Douglas College focus their expertise: Susan Ashcroft Audio Visual Librarian Susan is responsible for selecting all audio visual material for the Library, which includes videos, music CDs, and multi-media CD ROMs. Susan is an expert World Wide Web searcher — she knows all the tricks of the many search engines. Jean Cockburn Information Systems Librarian Jean coordinates the library’s electronic databases and interlibrary loan services. She is also responsible for all the reference-use PCs and terminals, which means that she gets to know the folks in Systems and Computing really well. Dianne Hewitt David Lam Campus Librarian Dianne not only takes care of David Lam Campus Library concerns, she is also the Library’s webmaster. She says it is a steep learning curve, but she looks forward to unveiling the Library’s homepage in the near future. Sandra Hochstein Instructional Services Librarian Sandra coordinates the Library’s user education program and teaches Skills for College Library Research, a seven week credit course. Sandra is the one to contact to discuss information literacy and evaluation of source documents, print or electronic. Mary Matthews Reference Services Librarian Not only does Mary organize the reference services for both campuses, she is also the extension librarian for Thomas Haney Campus. This means that she has been known to teach a class on accessing online databases without a computer in sight. Sounds unlikely, but Mary made it work. Len Mclver Serials Librarian Len makes sure that the Library subscribes to the periodicals which are needed to support the curriculum. (Increasingly, this means electronic publications.) Len also coordinates the subscription to the Searchbank online periodicals service. Patti Romanko Circulation Librarian Patti ensures that the computerized circulation system works well — “Barcode” is her middle name. She also coordinates Internet training workshops with Douglas Development. Joan Wenman Print Collection Librarian Joan is responsible for all monograph collections. See Joan if you want the Library to purchase books to support your curriculum. Joan also takes care of ongoing collection management duties such as the withdrawal of no longer useful items and the disposition of donated materials. Technical Services Librarian Penny Swanson Technical Services Librarian Penny is the only librarian with no regular student contact time, so she may not be as familiar a face to Library users. She is the systems manager for our INLEX integrated library system, and coordinates the acquisitions and programming of all Library materials. Director Virginia Chisholm Director of Learning Resources In addition to being responsible for administration of the Department of Learning Resources, Virginia also selects from the vast array of available Canadian government documents. ff
