DOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCHIVES MAD HATTER PAGE 5 Brett is a lively eight year old who needed minor surgery to correct an ear Problem. So an appointment was made for him to be treated at Children's Hospital through their Day Care Surgery Unit. Once, even a small] operation meant an overnight stay in hospital and separation of a child from his family. Now, thanks to the pioneering work of Children's Hospital, operations are no longer the traumatic event they once were for children too young to understand what is happening to them. In Day Care Surgery, parents help prepare a child for the experience, which takes only a few hours. Brett's mother was there when he was taken up to the Operating Room, and she was waiting by his side as he recovered from the anesthetic, reassuring and comforting. How does United Way fit into the picture? Well, the Day Care Surgery Unit, which treats about 30 boys and girls each day, is one of several new programs started by Children's Hospital with the help of United Way funding. It's reassuring for the youngsters, easy on parents, and it saves money. That means more children can be cared for and go home the same day with a smile. Last year, Children's Hospital helped 34,000 children through in and out patient care, emergency visits, dental care and the Day Care Surgery Unit. That's a lot of thanks coming your way! of the Lower Mainland
