Mad Hatter Page 17 PRESIDENT'S REPORT DOUGLAS COLLEGE HIVES External Matters (Cont'd) ARC ° Yesterday, I met with Pat Bates, College representative for the Lower Mainland United Way Campaign. A disconcerting piece of information surfaced during that meeting. While Douglas College had marginally increased the number of dollars contributed to the United Way last year, it was clearly apparent that, by far, Douglas College had the lowest volume and per capita contribution of all post-secondary institutions on the lower mainland. I have committed myself to the United Way for a more appropriate kind of response during this year's campaign. External - Education Work with the Council of Principals continues, in providing Ministry personnel with information from the colleges that is of assistance in maintaining an adequate share of the education budget. A meeting was held on June 26th with Ministry personnel in Victoria to discuss certain issues relating to student aid and federal funding of unemployed youth. I am currently attending a retreat of the Council of Principals which is attempting to identify common policies and agreed upon major issues, to be presented to the Ministry of Education on Monday evening, August 27th, at which time I will be in Victoria with a committee of the Principals to meet with the Minister. These activities are co-ordinated carefully with the B.C. Association of Colleges, in order to ensure that our efforts are harmonized. Internal - Education Registration commences August 27th. There has been a marked increase in the number of applications to the College, which has been coped with smoothly by our staff in the Admissions office, and faculty in the various programs involved. At this time, predictions cannot be made with certainty because of the general instability and the uncertainty regarding the impact of current student aid policies. It would seem, however, that our enrolment will be quite heavy, and it is possible that there may be an increase in the number of students turned away from the College. Every effort is being made to accommodate as many students as possible. Internal - Personnel On July 18th, Mr. Don McEachern, Director of Social Services and Allied Health, returned to long term disability as he has had a recurrence of his illness. At this time it seems likely that he will be able to return to work permanently in the early fall. In the meantime, I have assigned his responsibilities directly to Dr. Terry Clement, Dean of Applied Programs. This is a temporary measure, contingent upon Mr. McEachern's relatively early return to work. .f3
