CROLLER DECKHAND COURSE | Douglas College, in co-operation with the Pacific Trollers Association offers a short course for troller deckhands. This course is designed to provide the basic knowledge required by a novice seeking employment as a deckhand on a salmon troller, and will provide fifteen hours of instruction in the classroom and sixteen hours sea-time on a West Coast troller. COURSE OUTLINE: CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION” Jan. 19 Audio-visual introduction to troll fishery: regulations, species of fish, job description, types of trolling gear. Jan. 26 Making up fishing gear to catch salmon. Students will tie various combinations of gear: hoochies, butterflies, plugs, flashers, spoons. Pep -2 Basic Seamanship: Knot tying; splicing ropes; making eyes, breaks and beads. Skipper-Deckhand relationship. Feb. 9 Navigation. Students will gain sufficient knowledge to navigate from "A" to "B" safely in event skipper incapacitated. Feb. 16 Introduction to first aid at sea: how to cope with wounds, burns, fractures, sea sickness; artificial respiration and application of dressings and bandages. Feb. 23 Final examination, written and practical. COURSE OUTLINE: INSTRUCTION AT SEA - Familiarization with a troller and its equipment - Preparing a troller for sea - Setting and lifting anchor - Setting and retrieving the parachute - All phases of cockpit operation - Gaffing, gutting and washing fish = Icing fish - Cleaning and disinfecting checkers and hold - Plotting a course heading using loran, radar, etc. COURSE LIMITED TO TWENTY-FOUR STUDENTS . . . Male or female On successful completion of course students will receive.a:certificate. Names of students completing the course will be added to a list of troller deckhands seeking seeking employment with members of the Pacific Trollers Association.
