MAD HATTER TOUR THE MEDITERRANEAN Oya when a chill is in the air and summer is finally and unequivocally gone, is the perfect time to start dreaming about the Mediterranean. Begin- ning Wednesday, October 21, Douglas College will present a three-session slide tour entitled The Splendors of the Mediter- ranean. The non-credit course, part of the Armchair Travellers’ Series, will spend one evening on each of three of the countries to the north and west of the Mediter- ranean Sea. Participants will see Greece, Italy, and Spain through the eyes of their experienced tour leaders, Karin and George Storey. The Storeys use slides, music, and discussion to bring some of the western world’s oldest and most fascinating cultures to life. The Splendors of the Mediter- ranean is one of a variety of cultural and language programs held at the New Westminster cam- pus of Douglas College, one block from the Skytrain terminus. Please contact the Foundation Office in Room 4800A for further details. hz, CAN-AM CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL POWER VOLLEYBALL Former Douglas College Royal and All-Canadian Blake Bevan will lead his new squad, the U.B.C. Thunderbirds, in an inter- national power volleyball match against highly touted Cal State Northridge. Cal State, one of the top univer- sity teams in the USA’s volleyball hotbed, Southern California, will be looking for revenge for their state after last year’s narrow loss by Stanford University to B.C.’s bestever team. The Thunderbirds boast an almost legendary record in Canadian university competi- tion and coach Dale Ohman expects this year’s squad to bea national contender. The Can-Am Challenge match begins 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas College Gymnasium on Thursday, October 29. The match warm-up starts at 7:00 p.m. and admission is $3.00. Tickets can be purchased from the Douglas Col- lege Athletics department or at the door. The match is sponsored by the Douglas College Royals men’s and women’s volleyball teams.
