Noor zn Well, it’s back. You know, that bright yellow orb in the sky we were starting to think had gone forever. Now it’s time to haul out the sunscreen and shades . . . and to start complaining about the heat. And with many of us preparing for a big move to the David Lam Campus, July should prove to be hotter than usual. Stay tuned for a special August INside featuring what’s what and who’s who at the new campus, but in the meantime, take some time out for a big-screen blockbuster or a bestseller or two. . . and have a look at what your colleagues have been up to. Board Sailing At this year’s Association of Canadian Community Colleges annual meeting, Douglas College Board member Neal Nicholson was appointed ACCC Vice Chair, joining Board member Anne Fenton and Canadian Programs Advisory Committee member John McKendry. At the Advanced Education Council of B.C.’s annual meeting, Neal was re- elected Treasurer of that organization as well. Due South Athletics Instructor and disabled sports coach Tim Frick is packing his bags for Atlanta, Georgia, where he will help the Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team go for the gold. Vicki’s Victorious June’s 60/40 Draw winner was ESL’s Vicki Condon, who picked up $788.40 while student aid increased by $525.60. Birthday Bashes CMO staff members Christina Symons, Donna Dykeman, Sue Vincent, Jeff McDonald and Alan Loo all celebrate birthdays in June and July. Incredibly, all five of them claim to be turning the same age this year: “29... forever.” California Dreamin’ English and Communications’ Barb Sekhon spent some holiday time in California recently—and liked it so much she turned around and went right back. Actually, Barb went to one family wedding in the Golden State with her kids, where they had a great time meeting all their cousins. She then returned on her own for another wedding which was, by all reports, “extravagant and fabulous.” Good Move - Cashier Shelley Hay has joined the ranks of the land-owners (okay, wall-owners) with the purchase of a beautiful new condo within walking distance of the College. Bits and Bytes Librarian Jean Cockburn has now completed her educational leave, taken over the Fall 1995 and Winter 1996 semesters. She studied Computer Information Systems to increase her hands-on technical skills, and reports that it was also invaluable to “‘literally stand in a student’s shoes again.” She also had a chance to appreciate the “excellent level of instruction to be found at Douglas College.” Payroll Pride For the first time in the College’s history, the Payroll department was (briefly) closed as Sharon Conby, Dale Picketts, Sandra Hartney and Betty Clarke flew off to Toronto for The Canadian Payroll Association Conference. They’re now hard at work interpreting the ins and outs of new federal Employment Insurance regulations, which will affect some paycheque deductions starting January, 1997. Everybody Out of the Pool Learning Resource’s Helen Clarke and Consumer and Job Preparation’s Corrine Spring won this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs hockey pool for a cool $140 each. The Printshop’s Ron Fournier says congrats and see you for the Grey Cup pool! Istanbul, not Constantinople The Institute of Urban Ecology’s Val Schaefer has returned from the Habitat Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, where he worked to raise awareness of the Institute and urban ecological issues and to extend the College’s network of international contacts. Staff Changes Louie Girotto has been appointed Manager, Site Services for the David Lam Campus. The new campus also welcomes Kathy Rai, Maureen Rutter and Cathy Gibney to the Registrar’s Office and Heather Anderson and Ann Kim to Academic Advising. Donna McGee- Thompson becomes Academic Advisor at the Thomas Haney Centre, while at Royal Avenue Laura McDonald is now Assistant Registration Clerk in Continuing Education. Welcome back to Colleen Romano in Social Sciences and to Gloria Kummerfield, who has moved back to Psychiatric Nursing. |
