Thailand continued from page 1 my break in June,” says Jones. She adds the trip allowed her not only to help with the computer system, but to find out more about nurses’ training and practices in another country, which fits in with her goal of nursing in a developing nation. In one of many letters to Pauline Dunn, Program Coordinator of the Department of Nursing at Douglas College, Jones writes: “..We have the luxury of continuing our education throughout our lifetime and...can return to school when...we choose. In Thailand there is a shortage of schools and positions. Students must set a path and stick to it for their lifetimes unless they are very wealthy and have great pull. Even then, it is difficult to change faculties. Students who study a particular subject for a time then change their minds, must re-apply, get in line, and start all over... Transfer of credits is not done...Nursing students must be single to enter school as well, so it eliminates older students like myself...” Jones’ Bangkok education went beyond learning about nurses’ training and practices in Thailand. She also learned to be more open to health care approaches that differ from North American standards. During a recent presentation at Douglas College on her experiences in Thailand, Jones told about her concern for hygiene when she saw that hospitals use glass intravenous bottles, instead of the disposable plastic bags used in North America. “When I asked a nurse about the bottles, she replied that they had tried the bags, but found them to be too wasteful. The glass bottles aren’t reused, but they are recycled. That made me realize that although I think we do well in Canada, we’ ve still got a bit more to learn.” Events Calendar Ameila Douglas Gallery Colours of French Poetry Gabriela Diaconu Nov | - Dec 16 Opening Reception: Th, Nov 3 1600-2000 Gallery Hours:Mo-Fr 10am-7pm, Sa 1 lam-4pm, Su Closed Gallery Talks Ameila Douglas Gallery Tapestry in the Making Th, Nov 17 12:15pm Free Admission Noon at New West Free Concert Series Thursdays 12:30-1:30pm in the Performing Arts Theatre Nov 10 Kathryn Cernauskas, Flute Nov 24 Student Showcase Recital Dec | Student Showcase Recital Dec 8 Student Showcase Recital Talking Music - Tuesdays at Two Free music lecture Room 3221 2-4pm Nov 22 Piano Master Class with UBC professor and recording artist Jane Coop Theatre Our Country’s Good Nov 18 - 26 (no show Nov 21) Studio Theatre The Diviners Nov 25 - Dec 3 (no show Nov 28) Performing Arts Theatre Tickets: 527-5488 & Blackwell checking BCIT connections Computer Information Systems (CIS) instructor John Blackwell is looking into the feasibility of developing a joint-diploma project involving Douglas College and the B.C.
