INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / NOVEMBER 27, 1990 National Coaching Award Goes to College Instructor SS: isn’t spoiling Tim Frick. e Douglas College Physical Education Instructor has won the Longines/ Wittnauer Coaching Ex- cellence award for the second time in three years after guiding the Na- tional Women’s Wheelchair Basket- ball team to a Bronze medal in the Gold Cup, the international Wheel- chair Basketball tournament held this summer in St. Etiennes, France. Frick received the award at a banquet held in Ottawa on Oc- tober 28 by the Coaching Associa- tion of Canada. The award is given to certified coaches who guide their athletes to medal victories in their chosen sport. Frick is one of ten coaches to win the award this year. Previous to the bronze medal victory, the team picked up a gold medal at a disabled games in Assen, Holland, by taking four of five games against the Netherlands. At the Gold Cup, only Germany and the United States were stronger than Canada’s team. The key to his success is ver- satility, says Frick. “I think nowadays you have to be a holis- tic coach,” he says. “Apart from the individual skills and the team strategies and tactics, you also have to look at your athletes and help them in their training programs with nutri- tion and fitness, mental training, relaxation, goal setting. . . the whole range of how athletes live their lives.” He’s not stopping at just two awards, however. “My dream would be to win a medal at the Paralympics in Barcelona in 1992,” Frick says. “We all believe that if we train hard enough and work hard enough on mental prepara- tion, we can beat Germany and the United States.” Frick won the award in 1988 for coaching New Westminster na- tive Daniel Wesley to a gold medal in the 100 Meter Dash in the Paralympics in Seoul, Korea. Frick received an engraved plaque marking his achievement, as Well as a diamond set into his gold watch received for his pre- vious award.
