INSIVE VUUGLAS VULLOULC/VAIVUAO off, 1oeo @Two Plays to Delight a Young Audience "The Stolen Prince" and “The Lost Princess", two engaging plays for children, will be presented in several performan- ces by Douglas College theatre students. Two matinee perfor- mances will take place at Bear Creek in Surrey on the Saturday, January 21. The following week, the company moves to the Douglas College Performing Arts Theatre for evening perfor- mances on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28, as well as matinees on January 28 and 29. The twin plays, one a sequel to the other, are performed in the Chinese style, with the property man and a small percus- sion orchestra sharing the stage with the actors. "For instance," says director Gwyneth Harvey, "when any- thing exciting happens, the orchestra plays. They really create a din --the gong is very important. And when the character of a fisherman says he’s going fishing, the property man runs over with a bolt of fabric, and ‘unrolls’ the river across the stage. It’s quite charming, and calls upon the im- agination of the children." The Chinese theatrical style also sparks the audience im- agination with its minimal sets. As Ms. Harvey points out, "A lit- tle pagoda roof and a few Chinese lanterns form a very simple set that looks quite delightful." The story, too, is delightful: When twins -- a boy and a girl -- are born in the emperor’s palace, it sets off an extraordi- nary chain of events. First the unwanted baby girl is stolen by the children of the palace cook, but in their attempt to protect the little princess they inadver- tently take the prince. Meanwhile, the girl child is hid- den in the woods by its nurse, attacked by a dragon, and finally rescued.
