SOME MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT DISABLED _PERSONS MYTH #1 Disability is a contstantly frustrat- ing situation. Disabled people are- courageous, strong, brave, and ir C ational from overcoming their di ity. J FACT: While any disability is an in- ‘onvenience, ‘Many people do not spend ‘time thinking about their handicap or feeling sorry for themselves. ‘They conduct their daily affairs as nor- mally as possible. While some handi- ‘capping conditions are more tragic than others, it is important to re- member that disabled people cannot be stereotyped. Each person will deal with his/her disability in a wmique way. - ‘MYTH #2 able-bodied people have a moral obli- gation to help and care aoe disabled people. FACT: ‘There are varying levels” of endency ‘related to the Tmany handi- capping conditions. When a disabled person needs help he/she will usually ask for it. Common sense and cov i will a where and when help is : Disabled people lead totally different lives than the lives of others. FACT: It is reasonable to é assume that disabled persons share interests and concerns with non-handi capped per= sons. They spend their time in work, school, hobbies, recreation, and tasks of ‘daily living. | MYTH #4 Able-bodied people are eee and uncomfortable by han conditions. FACT: A non-handicapped person may have a number of reactions when meeting a disabled person ranging from guilt to curiosity to sympathy to discomfort. _ These mixed emotions will be elimi nated when the disabled and able-bodied person come in contact through work or play.
