THE MODIFIED WORK WEEK IS HERE With the official blessing of the Board of Industrial Relations and of the Douglas College Staff Association, ten groups of employees launched into a trial implementation of a Modified Work Week on 1 October. The Modified Work Week is a fairly new innovation in business, industry, education and government services. It probably surprises no one to read that Douglas College is among the very first to implement a Modified Work Week in the local education scene. Nine of the ten modifications entail a shortening of the basic work week in which the employees involved agree to work more than the standard 7 hours per day. In exchange they work less than 5 days each week. In some of the instances it means a 4-day week with a 3-day weekend every week. In others, it takes the form of working 5 days one week and 4 the next, with a long weekend every other weekend. Only one group has attempted the more novel and possibly even more interesting Flexible Work Week in which without exceeding the actual number of "required" working hours per month, the employees among themselves and in conjunction with their Supervisor, decide exactly how many hours they will work each specific day. 19 Modified Work Weeks are in progress in the following areas: Surrey Library Engineering Science (Departmental Steno) Fine Arts (Departmental Steno and Clerk Typist) Student Development - Richmond Campus Student Development - New Westminster Campvu Admissions - Richmond Campus Admissions - Surrey (Receptionist and Educational Planner) Planning Office (Steno) Accounting (Clerical Staff). Personnel (Clerical Staff) These trials will continue for six months during which time the advantages, dis- advantages, points good and bad, will be evaluated by the employees, the Douglas College Staff Association and this office to see what, if any, advantages there are to the employees and the College in establishing the Modified Work Week as a permanent feature at the College. If you, as either a participant, or as a "client" of one of the Departments involved have any comments, suggestions or questions about the trial, you are invited to. forward them to this office or to the Douglas College Staff Associa- tion. This summer the Richmind Campus Library and the New Westminster Campus Library tried a l-month implementation of Modi- fied Work Weeks. The results, though mixeded, were generally favourable and we are looking forward to seeing the results of trials spread over a longer period when the College is in full operation. This effort will probably involve almost everyone in the College either as a participant or as someone who must come in contact with a Department/Division which is on a Modified Work Week. We would very much value your reaction to the trial. We would also be pleased to give you any additional information you may wish about this idea at either the specific or general level.
