Paeey A a ae ee Ra A A eo OE NTRP ty at [me in tM Sih pe Athletes getting double-double standard in the courts he story jumps out at you from the newspaper: “Star Athlete caught with drugs!” Or “All-Star admits to beating wife!” Let's consider these two headlines without the professional athlete quality. They would be buried somewhere near the end of the news séction, to be read and forgotten along with the rest of the minor crime stories we are bombarded with daily. However, it seems that the media is obsessed with the trivial misdemeanors of professional athletes and tends to make athletes’ trials the lead story of every newscast\sports section until the litigation is finished. Now, if this was you or me caught with a negligent amount of drugs, would we get the same coverage? We probably wouldn't even make the nightly newscast, and as stated above, we would probably be buried as a blurb on the last page of the news section. Then, when said athlete is convicted and given a “slap on the wrist,’ various” special interest groups complain about the “double standard” of the sentences “ordinary” people and professional athletes receive. ass Panagopoulos Pizza requires 2 or 3 F/T or P/T drivers. Second, what about the double standard of coverage these athletes get compared to “ordinary” people? No wonder the judges\ juries in these cases give such light sentences, anybody angered by their favorite star being put behind bars could find the people who made the sentence decision and make their lives... unpleasant. Take, for example, the OJ Simpson case. How could the jury not find OJ not guilty? Most of them probably realized (correctly) that if they found Mr. Simpson guilty, anyone who “disagreed” with their decision could find each one of them and “voice their displeasure.” If the public wants to complain about the “double standard” of the sentences that athletes receive, they must also look at their desire for the sensationalist journalism that splashes athletes’ trials on the front page of the sports, instead of quietly reporting the arrest and the sentencing without the tabloid coverage. fieds Looking for an excellent source of reliable transportation?
