Acting President’s Report - August Peter Greenwood David Lam Campus An able team, led by Terry Leonard and his staff, Project Manager West Graydon, Architect Brian Hume of CJP Architects and the general contractor DGS Construction Company Ltd., are putting the finishing touches on a beautiful building that will serve our College well. Congratulations and thank you for a job well done. During the first month of operations, we expect there will be some glitches, but we expect these inconveniences to be minor; all efforts will be made not to disrupt classroom activities. Renovations The Royal Avenue Parkade is undergoing general concrete repair for damage caused by wear and tear from salt, water, oil, etc. over the years. The first phase was completed in late August; the next section will be done next summer. Signage has been improved in the parking areas, and high growth shrubs and trees were removed and replaced with low ground cover to enhance visibility and safety for College users. Please contact the Communications & Marketing Office, (604) 527-5325, FAX: (604) 527-5095, Room 4700 at the New West campus, 700 Royal Avenue, New Westminster, B.C. V3L 5B2 Computers and Technology Considerable energies have been spent equiping and integrating the new David Lam Campus with the existing Douglas College systems. In addition, the College obtained over 50 new computers for the Royal Avenue site. Half were used to upgrade an additional student lab (beyond the one already planned); the rest—25 notebook computers—are available for New Westminster-based faculty. Faculty interested in these, or the 25 notebooks at the David Lam Campus, should contact their Dean. Presidential search In July, the College commenced a search for an Interim President. Work is ongoing, and an appointment is expected soon (September). A second search will start in the fall to find a permanent CEO who will likely come on board next summer. Enrolment Summer enrolments were again strong, with numerous International Education activities and special groups at the College keeping student services hopping. Early signs are that, overall, enrolment figures are good this fall. The College was concerned about rumors regarding sharp drops in enrolment at other BC institutions, and the potential impact of the major universities lowering entrance requirements. It appears that the quality of our programs and the David Lam expansion mean we are “holding our ” own. FALL LATE REGISTRATION September 3 to 5, 1996 9:30 am to 7:00 pm September 6, 1996 9:30 am to 4:00 pm September 9 to 12, 1996 9:30 am to 7:00 pm September 13, 1996 9:30 am to 4:00 pm DAVID LAM CAMPUS Hours of Operation - Office of the Registrar President’s Council @ Agenda items for the next Council meeting on September 10th include finalizing membership and terms of reference for the Council, as well as defining the Council’s working relationship with key College bodies. There will also be a discussion about Douglas College’s potential role in the British Columbia Open University (BCOU). Government funding The College Budget was approved last June; details are available from your Department Head. As the budget was being finalized, the Ministry announced new funding under BC Benefits. The College will receive up to $450,000 to create new seats primarily for youths aged 19 to 24. These funds are being allocated to provide an additional 38 sections of instruction for an estimated 100 FTE. On a negative note, recent disclosure of the Provincial Budget not being balanced has resulted in a general province-wide freeze for new capital ® projects, and a partial clawback of two special capital grants for enhancing disabled access and for building maintenance. We hope this will be the extent for Douglas College of any province-wide action. In closing, I look forward to a challenging and exciting year for all of us as we enter our 26th year of operations.
