External Matters - Municipal On June 25th, I consulted with Pauline Jewett, M.P. for New Westminster/ Coquitlam regarding problems we have had in our applications for assistance from the federal government in the area of co-operative education. Two days later, Mr. Svend Robinson met with fr. Trerise, in order to hand over to the College a cheque from the tederal government in support of the Deer Lake Project, which has employed a number of students over the summer. On July 11th, I attended the retirement of Mr. Ken Mutter, Director of Instruction, and Mr. Bob Smith, Secretary/Treasurer, of Coquitlam School District. Both of these men were very significant in the planning and initial development of Douglas College, and it was, therefore, a pleasure to convey the best wishes of the College at the informal ceremony. The Royal City Development Group's current project is the creation of a community economic profile, the funds for which have come from grants and donations. This project is well on the way to completion, and has reflected credit on the faculty and students of Douglas College, who are doing the primary data collection and analysis. During the summer months a number of meetings have occurred with the City Recreation Department in working out the details of a proposal that will be submitted to New Westminster City Council and the Douglas College Board within the next two months in regard to College recreation and physical education training space. A detailed report on this matter has been made to the Finance, Facilities and Personne] Committee of the College Board. Dr. Clement is continuing detailed work on this matter. On August 13th, the College welcomed a group of students and a faculty member from Momayama University, Osaka. This group is staying at Douglas College for a period of time for language instruction and orientation to Canadian society. It is highly likely that Douglas College will be asked to enter into a formal co-operative relation- ship with Momeyama University. Later on that week, Randi Duke and I met with the Economic Development Committee of Coquitlam Chamber of Commerce, which was interested in finding out what assistance the College could offer them in carrying out a community economic analysis and the development of an economic strategy for the area.
