-& Sats. Burrows Movin’ Fast By Josh Martin, Sports Editor hen you look at the J Vancouver Canucks, a lot of people tend to forget about feisty forward Alexandre Burrows. He is often overseen and underrated around the league, playing a gritty style and getting into those dirty corners while being an effective force on the penalty kill (which the Canucks need to desperately work on this season). Over the years, hard core Vancouver Canuck fans have appreciated Burrows from the first day he started out with the squad because he has the never give up attitude that makes him standout on the ice. Once the puck is heading back to the Vancouver goal, the first guy you see giving it his all is... yup, you’ ve guessed it— Alex Burrows. With the Sedins and Luongo taking up most of the limelight from the media and opponent teams, Burrows has been left a little bit in the shadows, though that has not necessarily been a negative thing for the winger. Last season Burrows managed to scrounge up 35 goals and 32 assists with a plus/minus rating of 34 while not getting any minutes on the power play. In the off-season, Burrows had shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum and is unfortunately not expected to start until November instead of this week on Saturday 18 against the Los Angeles Kings. With the absence of Burrows there will be an opening spot in the top six forwards. Expect winger Samuelsson to step up onto the first line, leaving a handful of players to have the opportunity of playing on the second line. Brendan Morrison, Jeff Tambellini and Raffi Torres are the favourites to possibily fit into the hole that is left to be filled. I’m thinking that if Burrows comes back from his injury in top form and gets some minutes on the Special Teams, he’s going to be a pest out there. Perhaps this season he’ll even be able to hit that 40 goal mark. It’s a reasonable number that he has the potential to reach. Perhaps not. Burrows’ 35 tallies last season were his career-high and coincidentally made him the highest scoring forward on the team, beating out teammate Mikael Samuelsson who finished with 30. A season highlight for Burrows that we all remember from halfway through the season would have to be when he had back-to-back hat tricks. The first hat trick was against the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 7-3 win and the second one came in a 4-0 blanking against the Phoenix Coyotes. Six goals in two consecutive games is an achievement that will not be soon forgotten, especially for the winger himself.
