Changes in provincial legislation mean that, beginning in June 1993, Douglas ae College will have the authority to offer as- sociate degrees in arts and science. These were diploma programs up to now. Gordon Gilgan, Dean of the Academic Division, says the associate degree will have more impact. “It’s a very definite step in terms of employability and earning power. The degree indicates breadth of knowledge along with a specialization. Employers are asking for these credentials. They view these credentials as important.” The benefit to the student and to employers is the standard credential, says Gilgan. “The associate degree will stand- ardize and provide a provincially recognized credential. People will know that a degree is standard, which isn’t the case for a baccalaureate. Open House in Coquitlam You're invited for tea, coffee and...a look at a Phonetic Keyboard. The staff at Douglas College's temporary Coquitlam facility at the Lincoln Centre are hosting an open house on December 9 from 2 pm to 4 pm. The Coquitlam facility features two class- rooms offering Community Programs and Services courses. It also houses the Bos- well Project, a federally funded project to assess the new Boswell Phonetic Key- board designed for people with visual disabilities. Ten students are currently training on the new computer technology which features readback by speech syn- thesizer. “We're inviting people to come out and see what we're doing,” says Community Programs and Services Senior Clerk Brenda Jack. “The Boswell students will be demonstrating the keyboard and they are really excited to have people see what they’ve been doing.” The facility is located in room 136 at 3030 Lincoln Avenue in the Lincoln Centre Mall. a inside INside...
