LETTITOR MEDIUM Having to say goodbye Garth McLennan Editor in Chief lor most of us, when we look back upon our childhood, we can often identify one or two things that made the process of growing up just a little bit easier. It could have been a book that you read over and over again, a family activity, anything really. I think that for most of us, regardless of what it may be, there’s something out there that we can establish as a bit of a tether to our younger days. For me, there were, and I suppose still are, two T.V. shows that I can look to and see as major influences on me growing up, LOST and Smallville. LOST came to an end back in May after six sensational seasons and Smallville is currently in the midst of its own final year, it’s tenth. Saying goodbye to both shows has admittedly been a bit of a hard process. I know that they’re both just television programs after all, but the fact is, I grew up with those shows. The leading characters in both of them, Dr. Jack Shepherd and Clark Kent, respectively, have acted as moral compasses for me. They’re the two people I’ve always tried to model myself after. So what if they aren’t real people? The way I look at it is there’s nothing wrong with striving for perfection, and real people aren’t always perfect. Now, with both shows taking their final seasonal laps, I’m faced, for the first time in over a decade, of life without either of them. It’s a strange feeling. I mean, for basically all of my main growing years, they’ve been there. When things have gotten tough, they’ve been there. It’s almost, in an out of the ordinary way, a bit like graduation. Both shows taught me more than I ever imagined they would when I first sat down to watch them, and now that they’re over (or almost over, in the case of Smallville), I have to take what I learned and apply it every single day. I know that, in the end, they’re both just T.V. shows, but there’s a different feeling I get from these two, unlike just about anything I’ve ever felt before. Those two programs were a pair of very strong links to my childhood, and now, with them about to fade into the horizon, it’s a bit like saying goodbye to my _ childhood. There’s no question that I'll always remember both shows and the lessons they taught me, but now, I have this feeling that it’s time to use those lessons, to move on from childhood. It’s time, as hard as it is, to say goodbye. the Original $10 off any purchase of $50 or more upon presentation of this coupon coupon expires Dec 31, 2011 434A best Colombse St : New Westminster, BC © WWw.capsbicycleshop.com phone: 604-524-3611 WRITE FOR US!
