ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT A DiG for All Shins 27 Acts Vie for Dominance in CiTR’s Kevin Lalonde, OP Arts & Entertainment Editor There’s nothing more entertaining in life than watching eople engage in a life or death struggle in vain hopes of spring-boarding their musical aspirations into the rofessional and respected realm of success while you it back with a pint and nod critically. Just the thing for he inner hipster in all of us! For those not yet acquainted with one of ‘ancouver’s greatest musical endeavors, SHiNDiG is an pnnual 13 week-long battle of the bands hosted and organized by UBC's stellar campus-cOmmunity radio ptation CiTR 101.9. Boasting 27 different acts of all enres (except country and rap), SHiNDiG brings a ombination of the best of up-and-coming and well established musical groups in the city together every Tuesday night at the Railway Club. Always a hub of hip- Bter activity, SHiNDiG gives participants and viewers blike a chance to drink beer, catch up with prominent locals musicians, catch some awesome tunes, and some- rimes some not-so-awesome tunes too. No matter what, ’s always a fun time. Plus there’s the always exciting beet-for-jokes. So with week five already over this last Tuesday, how s this year’s DiG shaping up? For this, let’s check the scoreboard! Week One binger-songwriter D. Trevlon emerged the victor at BHiINDiG’s opening night on September 12, beating but Sweetheart and Bad Moves. I’d offer some kind of commentary on the outcome of Night One’s battle, but was busy cheating on Paris Hilton with Ashlee impson that night, and couldn’t attend. Yeah, that’s editor@gmail.com | aw right, I taught Nick Carter everything he knows. Week Two The beautiful harmonies and lush vocal stylings of local choral collective The Choir Practice took the trophy on September 1, sneaking by the guitar-generated feedback and delay work of birdband and the all out rockitude of Oneyedjacks. I’m pretty sure that The Choir Practice is somehow related to lo-fi poppers P:ano, but given the all out incestuous nature of the Vancouver music com- munity, don’t quote me on that. Week Three Lover Lover Lover took the cake on September 26, making war (not love) on It’s A Living Thing and Tool- esque rockers Azimyth. Props to Azimyth, by the way, for great vocals, thumping bass, and a ridiculously fun covet of “Fortunate Son.” Good show boys, keep playin’. Week Four All girl duo The Pack took their Sleater-Stripes-style ~ rock action to the faces of, um, another rock band called Shades of Grey and the synthy guitar and reverb vocal work of Terrorbird. Crunchy rock seems to be the thing these days, so future contestants, beware. That’s it for the first month of SHiNDiG. Remember to set aside all of your Tuesdays until the middle of December, because it’s gonna be a raucous good time. See you at the Rail, and good luck to all of this yeat’s participants!
