The donation will help support UE environmental education workshops conducted for local schools and community groups. Rounding up recognition Recognizing excellence is an annual tradition at Douglas College. This year is no exception. The Douglas College Team Excellence Awards are once again open for nominations. Awards will be presented to working teams of two or more Douglas College employees, including employees participating in work groups, cross- departmental projects, task teams or committees. All employees are eligible. Recipients will receive their awards at the 10th Annual Recognition Reception, where employee's commitments, achievements and long service are recognized. The reception will be held on November 22 from 4-6pm in the cafeteria at the New Westminster Campus. The application deadline is Monday October 15. Forms must be completed and submitted to the President’s Office by 4:30pm. Tired of the daily grind If youre tired of the daily grind, challenge yourself and help out a great cause. Join instructors and students from Douglas College's Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) program as they hike up North Vancouver's famous 2.9 km Grouse Grind trail to raise funds for the College’s Uganda Project. This fundraiser will help send four CSSW students on work-experience placements in Uganda where they work in a variety of community service and health care facilities and projects. Money raised will help students complete their social service training and support an ? endowment fund for education, social service and health programs in the region. The College community can support this event by pledging their support for hikers or lacing up and joining in, Whether pledging or collecting, all donations of $10 or more will be tax deductible. The Uganda Grind takes place on Saturday, October 13 at llam. Douglas College employees can participate in the Canada Savings Bonds (CSB) program through automatic payroll deduction. Forms are available in the booklet Realize Your Dreams located at the Payroll Office in room 4720. New applications or change forms must be received in the Payroll Office no later than October 19. Employees who are already enrolled in the CSB program need not reapply and current deductions will continue. The Library has upgraded and purchased several new electronic journal databases to assist with the research needs of the College community and, in particular, students in the new degree programs. The databases include business, child and adolescent development, law, performing arts, scholarly arts and sciences, sociology and sports. On September 5, the container of books donated by Douglas College faculty in December 2006 and January of this year arrived at the University of Science and Technology in Kakamega, Kenya. Elizabeth Peerless, a retired Geography instructor, will be collecting books again early in 2008. Criminology and nursing books are particularly needed for new degree programs, but any books (except pure Canadiana) will be accepted.
