The Superannuation Commission does not search all its records for a member's prior service with other pension plans. That is why members must advise their employer of any service or contnbution with another employer. Some transfers may only be shifted within a certain period after the start of participation in a plan. Another issue is keeping your affairs in order. A member's pension assets will go to the legal spouse unless there is a contrary court order or separation agreement. If a plan member changes marital status, enters a common-law relationship and the legal spouse has not signed a waiver of claim, the estate and courts may launch a costly search for the legal spouse at the time of the member's death. It is important for employees to keep the Commission up-to-date on their personal status. Court-defined changes of name or marital status should be reported promptly.
