V3L 5B2 New counselling service available to college employees From time to time, many of us experience legal or financial problems, family or marital troubles, job stress, or depression. Sometimes alcohol or substance dependencies develop. Where can you turn? Wilson Banwell & Associates, the new Employee Assistance Plan Coordinator, provides free-of- charge counselling services to all regular employees and their immediate families. Personnel Manager Rob Corbett indicated that the decision to go with Wilson Banwell was based on Michael Dunn is one of the luthiers from across Canada who were com- missioned to build an instrument by the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. This copy of a 1930’s-style French jazz guitar is what he decided to produce for an exhibition of contemporary Canadian musical instru- ments on display at the Museum of Civilization from September 1992 to September 1993. “They asked me what | would like to build, and this Counselling continued on page 6 guitar is a specialty of mine,” says Dunn, Convenor of the College’s Musical Instrument Construction/Repair program. “I wanted to make something that | make for people all the time.” An unusual feature of this guitar is in the sound hole. There is a secon- dary soundbox inside the guitar, and the black-and-white device in the sound hole is a reflector, which helps focus the upper end of the guitar’s range. The guitar also features Brazilian rosewood on the back and sides, while the soundboard is made of Western red cedar. It’s not the first time Dunn has produced guitars for the Museum of Civilization. Two of his Baroque guitars have been part of their collection since the early 1970's. Dunn and Music Instructor Michael Strutt are also busy organizing the 2nd annual Guitar Festival, to be held in November, here at Douglas College. The Festival features concerts, workshops, videos and an impres- sive display of instruments. This year’s Festival runs Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23. Watch for it.
