AEE. = By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor exual appetites and preferences S vary depending on the person; who and what you choose to do in the bedroom may reflect who you are as an individual or may unearth some primal tendencies that you were not aware of. Nowadays, sex doesn’t mean you have to be married, or even in a relationship for that matter; teen pregnancies, hooking up with friends, sleeping with co-workers, and even mid-life affairs, have become casual acts that are forgiven unless you’re not getting any. Over the last week I began to wonder if we have gone a little too far in our interpretation of intercourse. Having sex has become like ordering a good steak: go to the bar, order a drink, and wait for a juicy piece to come your way. The morning after, otherwise known as the “walk of shame,” has become a topic to brag about rather than something to be ashamed. While My choice our grandmothers has diamond rings on their fingers before they went to bed, women today deflect pregnancy and are considered “a catch” if they have sexual experience instead of their virginity. Thanks to TV shows such as HBO’s Sex in the City, the image of an independent female is Ms. Samantha Jones; scandalous, wealthy, independent, and wearing ridiculously nice shoes. When it comes to sex, everybody wants it, everybody needs it, and everyone is searching for it; whether they like to admit to it or not. Society has come a long way in the ideals and demands we have toward sex, which has benefits such as legalizing abortions and gay marriage. Today sex is like air; it’s not a big deal of lingerie is slightly bland when it comes to color, I was under the impression that it was classy and simple a la Audrey Hepburn, but maybe I am mistaken, as one of my friends’ immediate responses was, “Wow. We need to get you laid.” While I love how non- judgmental society has become, and how women are no longer considered “sluts” if we choose to take control of our desires rather than settling for a carton of Haagen Dazs, I feel that our relationships suffer as a result of our lack of respect regarding sex. I may sound old fashioned and have boring underwear, but when it comes to ordering a good steak, I prefer filet mignon.
