Student by L.C. Di Marco POSITIONS: President -- Karen Downey Aiaz Perez Herb Hanna Scott Riley Vice-President -- Scott Nelson Marcel Chambers Carla Crozier Ronaldo Horvat Treasurer -- Julian C. Smit Cathy Schofield Secretary -- Tracey Harrison ne Sonny Kisch Karen Downey: "It is my belief that experience working with people is essential for an effective leadership role. These are some of the issues that concern me: 1. Funding 2. Services 3. Quality Education 4. Liason between students, faculty and administration 5. Equality I have the experience and ‘the desire to be effective, and with input and support I can ensure that student concerns will be recog- nized and promptly acted upon. For further information regarding these issues, please attend the all- candidates meeting in the concorse Thursday, March 24 at 12 noon. I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have for me during this week and at the All- Candidates meeting." Aiaz Perez:. "l. Lower cafeteria should be student run and operated, providing student employment - a student discound should be given to provide more af- fordable food. 2. Educational opportunities should be enhanced for single mothers, by lobbying administra- tion to expand day care facilities, as well as fund them. 3. Emphasis on the quality of education. Lobbying for more courses (especially second year and summer programs) and to reduce the cost or books and tuition. 4. Raise the level of internation- ° al consciousness by bringing in ° speakers, having debated focussing’ on issues of global concern suchas: South Africa, Latin America, Mid- dle East, The environment, as well -as examining Canada’s role in these issues. These are the issues that I consider to be of primary impor- tance, for I feel that their im- plementation will cause nothing but positive change." Herb Hanna: "This is the age of technocrats - I’ll have to ask my campaign manager to write my platform." Scott Riley: No platform sub- mitted. Marcel Chalmers: “I am the best person for the position of vice because I stand for that which is in the best interest of the student body. I would be available to all the stu- dents at the New West campus Mon/Thurs for as long as possible and on Fridays I would be at Maple Ridge listening to the concerns of our annex campus. In this way I would guarantee that the concerns _ of our total student body would be heard and well represented. Among immediate issues that I would attempt to deal with are: 1. Canada Games Pool (Admis- sion) - I would wish to meet with pool officials to discuss the pos- sibility of lowering entrance prices and to write up a contract holding them to a set sudent rate for a period of time. 2. Transit fares - I would ar- range a meeting to discuss student fares for bus and SkyTrain users. Asa bus user I hate paying so much it is almost better to drivge a car, but... 3. Student parking - should be free for those students who drive to douoglas. If Capilano and Langara students have free parking why shouldn’t we? We have the space. Why should IMPARK have it? I want to see students running the parking lot, and free, (or at the very least greatly reduced) parking rates. 4. C.F.S. - The vice is expected to work with the Canadian Federatrion of students which gives us a great many services. Some of these are Student-Saver Discounts, Travel Cuts, Swap, and much more. My stand is for CFS since it helps us! I feel that we should stay with it. SO...YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR MARCEL CHAL- MERS FOR VICE...VISIT ME IN THE STUDENT SOCIETY LOBBY." Ronaldo Horvat: "If elected as ‘vice, one of my first priorities is to “create greater clean-up attempts in the concorse area during college hours. There are many employ- ment opportunities within the col- lege that are presently being carried out by contracted organizations. These opportunities should be given to students in financial need. The cafetiria is run by a company that is profitting from STUDENT sales. The prices are outrageous, so if elected I will try to make the lower cafetiria into a student-run cafe with an espresso bar and pub. This will create student employ- ment opportunities while offering cheap prices. I would be com- ‘mitted to the creation of stronger support for Douglas College from external organizations in the hopes of having greater lobbying power to promote the interests of students. Presently the Student Society of- fice has not been as accessible to students as I would like. The photocopying machines in the of- fice are paid by students therefore the society office should keep longer hours so students can benefit from these machines. If elected I will keep extended office hours so all students can have a chance to voice their concerns to a person that will listen and act upon those con- cerns. The present mode of adver- tising for events around the col- legee is in definite need of upgrad- ing. If elected I will make sure that students will be properly notified about all issues concerning them. I believe that students are not here for faculty and administrat but rather they are here for students. Faculty and administration have a duty to uphold and that is to provide the highest education standards achievable as well as improving student services. I aim to make sure that these standards are upheld and where possible, greatly improved." Carla Crozier: "I am a respon- sible and open individual who will work for student needs. My prac- ticality allows me to debate a broad spectrum of topics and come to concise conclusions. The Student Society needs to be more visible. More emphasis needs to be placed on keeping students informed of the Student Society actions, as well as those of the Canadian Federation of Students. I am more than willing to discuss my stance on issues at anytime. If you have any questions concerning the eleddctions, please feel free to talk to me." Scott Nelson: "Vote Scott Nel- son for Vice! Avoiding a strike and negotiating a contract betweeen faculty and Douglas College is the most important issue affecting Douglas College and its students at this present time. We must con- tinue to apply pressure to both sides for a quick settlement. Issues of vital importance such as the pos- sibility ofa strike is where your stu- dent government can voice your ociety candidates opinion. I’ve been at Douglas Col- lege for 2 1/2 years upon which two of these have been involved with the student society, intramurals, ski club, and other student interest groups. With your support as vice, I hope to: 1. Help get a contract settlement between faculty and administra- tion. 2. Pressure the gov’t to increase spending on education. 3. Increase day-care funding for single parents. 4. Push for campus pub. 5. Bring your interests forward to senate. 6. Pust for more job programs which help fund student jobs." Julian C. Smit: "I welcome this opportunity to inform you, my fel- low students, of my background and experience, and why in voting for me as treasurer you shall be ac- ting to elect a trustworthy candidate capable of faithfully executing the duties of the office. Prior to attend- ing Douglas College I was employed in the Canadian Finan- cial industry as a corporate banker; stock, bond and futures broker; foreign exchange trader and as an investment portfolio advisor and co-ordinator. I hold membership in the Vancouver Society of Financial Analysts, Canadian Society of Financial Analysts, Royal Economic Society (Cambridge University), Canadian Bankers’ Association; and as a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. Fur- ther, I acted as a Canadian repre- sentative and advisor to both the Aga Khan Foundation and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Develop- ment. I hold a universtiy degree in Economics, Politics and Philosophy as triple-majors. While at Douglas College, I have acted as a Health/Dental rep. to the DCSS and as a Senate member I have regularly attended numerous Col- lege committees and the Douglas - College Foundation and College | board meeting. I sincerely feel that with my experience in both the . financial world and a Senate mem- ber I am uniquely qualified to co- ordinate an annual budget of over $200,000. The treasurer’s office is one that must be filled by a can- didate that is qualified, popularity alone is not enough." Cathy Schofield: "I would like to explore the possibility of employing students in the cafetiria. I would like to improve student awareness of the political scene and of the various activities on campus and I advocate employ- ment of funds to the benefit of the student body as a whole." Sonny Kisch: "I have par- « ticipated in school politics before and I have also been a member of the work force for 3 years. Having “ attended Douglas College since the spring of 1987, I am concerned about: increasing the child care ser- vices, student parking facilities, student employment as well as sup- porting the possibility of getting a . Pub." Tracy Hanson: "The gal in the flying wheelchair is Tracey Han- son and I’m running for secretary. <« I have worked in previous settings in the community as recording secretary, both office and board of directors. I intend to put a big "E" in for effort if elected. Regardless of who wins the secretary position, next year’s secretary will certainly ~ be a capable and worthy individual to assist the senate." These are the unedited versions of the candidates platforms. Can- didates that are elected will be in office for one year. We hope this will better enable you to choose the candidates that represent your * concerns.
