In the final round on Sunday, Parry and Greenard battled head to head for 18 holes with the final result in the balance until the last hole when Greenard’s birdie putt lipped out to give Parry a one- stroke victory. Both Golfers scored 76 in wet drizzly conditions while Whittingham faded with a final round of 78. The best score on Sun- day was turned in by Brian Killins of Douglas with a score of 74. Final team standings were: 1. Malaspina College - Gold medal 2. Douglas College - Silver medal 3. Cariboo College - Bronze medal 4. Fraser Valley College 5. Royal Roads College Women’s Basketball Royals Women’s Basketball kicked off their season Friday (Oct. 20) night against the Alumni. As one might expect, after five years of strong women’s basketball at Douglas, the Alumni were not going to be push-overs. Leading the Alumni to a 79-63 victory over the Royals were An- gela Hutchinson and Lorraine Marken, both New Westminster graduates, with 12 and 15 points respectively. Also leading the way were Cara Goose (12 points) and Andrea Jackson (8 points). Marken and Jackson are former All Cana- dians who are playing University ball; Marken at UBC and Jackson is red-shirting at Western Washington. For the Royals, Crystal Cald- well, a transfer from Capilano Col- lege, led the way with 17, with Janice Halls and Lorraine Denis contributing fine efforts on defense. Although the Royals were able to tie the Alumni 33 all at the half, the experience and maturity were too much to overcome. The chance to compete against players who have already learned the lessons will help this year’s edition mature that much faster. Men’s Basketball Douglas College Royal Men’s Basketball opened the season Friday (Oct. 20) night against the Alumni. Leading the Alumni to a 91-68 victory over the Royals were Brent Henderson and Willis Parnell with 14 and 13 points respectively; also Rod Gettel with 12 points and Mark Osachoff, 11 points. John Mujcin, first year player from Sal- mon Arm, led the Royals with 14 points, with Fred Apolinario, a senior guard from the Royals, 12 points. Royals next action is in Montreal at the Dawson Tourna- ment Oct. 25-29. Royals next home game is Friday, November 3 at 8:00 against U. of Vic. JV’s. Women’s Volleyball The first week of league play saw the Douglas College Women’s Volleyball Team come away win- ners in two of three matches. The Royals lost the league opener to Trinity Western Univer- sity in three straight games, 15-17, 3-15, 13-15. The early opening loss was quickly reversed by defeating Selkirk College 15-7, 15-8, 15-1. The women’s best performance came in a long shoot-out with Capilano College, with Douglas eventually winning the match 3 games to 2. Douglas College was led by middle blocker Sue Sharp with 14 blocks and 30 kills. Other solid performances were put in by veteran Sandra Boffo, freshmen Yvonne Eviston & Nicole Hennelly. Men’s Volleyball Coach Brian Newman and his team returned from the first BCCAA tournament of the year two for two. The Royals defeated Malaspina 15-5, 13-15, 15-8, 15-3 & Trinity Western 15-5, 15-13, 15-3. “Our setters, Tony Dedaro and Daniel Matwick showed great im- agination in quarterbacking the plays”, says coach Newman, who was as thrilled as his team with the great beginning. Douglas is tied with VCC and Selkirk for first place in the Con- ference standings. The next tournament is at Douglas November 4th.
