On the other hand, Faculty Development Coordinator Gillies Malnarich knows that the actual achievements of the Spring Break Conference on Learning, Teaching and Technology conference held here February 15 & 16 can only be measured with time. “The purpose of the conference was to bring people together and create a connecting point for discussing and applying the College action plan on teaching, learning and technology,” says Malnarich. “The attendance was impressive, especially considering the _cross-section of people represented. Now if the turnout results in people pursuing professional development and in active Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable meetings, then we can call the event a complete success.” Based on an idea developed by the American Association for Higher Education, the Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable meetings are intended to encourage College-wide participation in determining the best and most cost-effective ways of using 66 ..it brings together the teachers who will be using the technology in the classroom, the technicians who work with it behind the scenes, and the administrators who budget for it. 99 technology to improve education. The system works by providing a place for open dialogue between College faculty, administration, staff from key service and support departments, and any other interested parties. “Tt’s different from most other forms of action because it brings together the teachers who will be using the technology in the classroom, the technicians who work with it behind the scenes, and the administrators who budget for it,” says Malnarich. Due to the rapid pace of technological change, many learning institutions have fallen to using a fragmented, reactive approach to the prablem of integrating technology with teaching. By giving institutions immediate access to many different levels of expertise simultaneously, Roundtables increase their ability to take a proactive, well-informed approach to a complex problem. For more information on the Teaching, Learning & Technology Network, contact Gillies Malnarich at extension 5411. The next Roundtable meeting will be held Wednesday, March 27, 4-6pm, in the Douglas Room. To pre-register, call 5440. Everyone is welcome. |
