During the first two decades of this century, the 2,800 km Grand Trunk Railway played an important role in the development of north-central British Columbia, especially Prince Rupert, Prince George, and Hazelton. The book revises traditional interpretations of the company’s history and is an important contribution to the field of railway and business history. Leonard’s first book, it’s published by UBC Press. Discourse continued from page 1 lead article by UBC Professor Emeritus of Higher Education John Dennison provides historical information concerning the creation and growth of the community college system, as well as suggesting some options for the future. Following Dennison, Douglas College writers Howard Eaton and Ted James call, in different ways, for information and careful consideration in dealing with the matter. Rounding the journal out are short reports from Barrie Barrington and Linda Pickhall concerning plans for the extension of programs in music and nursing, and a review of John Dennison’s book, Challenge and Opportunity, by Lorna McCallum. The Centre for Educational Technology’s Jamie Gunn did the graphic design. Editor Barrington-Foote tried to make sure that everyone interested received a copy of the kickoff issue, but if he missed anyone, there are still copies available. Call him at local 5275. Discourse Editor Kevin Barrington-Foote toasts Douglas College’s newest publication at a Douglas Room gathering to launch the magazine. 11
