Women urged to make the call

| t’s time more women wore the
stripes in the sports family, says Betty
Lou Hayes.

The Director of Athletics for
Douglas College has helped organize
aclinic to inform women about
opportunities in sports officiating.
Co-sponsored by Douglas College and
several B.C. sports officiating bodies,
the clinic called You Make The Call
runs Nov. 1-3.

"TI think this is important because
there are very few women in officiat-
ing, and virtually none at the top
levels. It’s time for women to get
involved," says Hayes.

"There are now opportunities for
women in this area, and there are
people who will help them take
advantage of it, but it’s up to women
to have the desire do it."

Becoming a referee, says Hayes,
provides women with another way in

which they can participate in athletics.
And besides, unlike most amateur

coaches and athletes, officials get paid.

Sessions will be hosted by four top
North American women officials.
Oregon’s Bonnie Rae Anderson is one
of the top softball umpires.in the U.S.,
qualified to officiate at Olympic and
Pan American levels. New
Westminster’s Devona Adams is
regarded as B.C.’s finest female bas-
ketball referee, having officiated at
three national championships. Janice
Deakon of Kingston, Ont. is the first
Canadian woman licensed to referee
international basketball. Debbie
Jackson of Edmonton is one of the
country’s top female volleyball
officials.

Registration takes place from
8pm-10pm on November 1, with
workshops from 9am-Spm on
November 2-3. Cost for the weekend,

including Friday’s pre-clinic social, is
$25. For more information call 5043;
to register, call 5472. m
