TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD June 20, 1985. External Matters - Education QO During May, the College, and the Royal City Community Development Association was the subject of considerable interest. Those activities resulted in interviews for television with the KNOW, and the Vancouver Sun, as well as involvements relating to local economic development and youth employment in Langley and here at Douglas College. As a result of a meeting on May 22nd, of College Faculty and Administration, an approach to the College's involvement in International Education acti- vities is being presented in principle to the Board this evening. Infor- mation gained at the BCAC Conference seems to support the general approach that we are proposing. On May 23rd, Dr. Barry Moore, of Fraser Valley College, and I made a presentation to the C-IEA Conference in Abbotsford, regarding the general situation and outlook for community colleges in the province. We were shown every attention and courtesy, and I appreciated the privilege of making the presentation. On May 27th, the Adult Basic Education Coordinators from around the province held a meeting here at Douglas that focussed on increasing the consistency of adult basic education curriculums around the province. At the end of May, Kwantlen College held a breakfast and briefing to 9 local industrial personnel to acquaint them with the nature and objectives of their technology program. The new graduates of the program were very much in evidence. It was a pleasure to be able to offer the best wishes and congratulations of Douglas College to this group. On the following day, Mr. Trerise, Mr. Murnane and I attended a meeting at BCIT which announced the merging of BCIT and PVI at the end of June. In early June, Mr. Doerr and I met with Mr. John Talbot, responsible for Social Services to Elderly People in Burnaby, in order to discuss the significance of the rapidly increasing number of elderly people in Burnaby Municipality, in terms of health, social and recreational services, and educational needs. On June 7th, the College was host to Mr. Guy Dauncey, of the United Kingdom, who was the feature speaker at the Conference on Local Economic Renewal, held at Douglas College on June 7, 8 and 9. Mr. Dauncey pro- vided an excellent presentation on local economic development, which has left us with a number of challenges regarding our educational role. A number of Douglas College personnel were present at the meetings. On the weekend of June 9 and 10, the Annual General Meeting of the Bit. Association of Colleges was held. Detailed reports of this meeting will be provided by members of the Board. On June 13th, there was a formal meeting of the members of the Douglas Oo College Board and the Maple Ridge School District Board of School Trustees, to discuss the implications of the recently ratified joint
