Wor 70Ne Kids home for the summer, the solstice, the Jazz Festival, and hopefully the end of the hockey season are a few June things that come to mind, but before we swing into summer, let’s catch up with what happened in May. There’s a passel of new grandmothers in the Library these days. Helen Rowan’s new grandson is Matt, Jean Hammer’s grandson is Curtis, and Maureen Wilkinson’s is Aidan. Meanwhile, in the Department of Child, Family & Community Studies, faculty member Elva Reid celebrated her 65th birthday in May and the birth of a grandchild. CFCS Director Bev Miller has a new granddaughter, Jenna, and has something else to celebrate, too...her husband John Gillespie is the new president of BCIT. Silvia boards Peace Train... Retired College faculty member Silvia McFadyen-Jones will fly to Helsinki this summer for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom conference in Helsinki, Finland, in August. Then she’ ll board the Peace Train from Helsinki to Beijing, China, where she’s a representative at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women from September 8 to 14. The train trip to promote peace and human rights includes stops, receptions and workshops throughout Eastern Europe and Asia. You may remember that last April, we told you about Silvia’s trip to South Africa to help monitor the elections there. Silvia retired from the College’s Early Childhood Eduction program, which she helped found, in 1988. Ros hedges her pet... A pet can become a very important part of the family, so Ros Wilson in the Lower Cafeteria was naturally very upset when the family dog Beau passed away in April after a long and happy life. She and her family weren’t planning to get another pet, but apparently her daughter brought home a hedgehog one day last month, and it quickly became a fixture around the house -- an expensive fixture, because male hedgehogs retail for about $200, and females for $400. Ros’s is a male, and is named Spikey. Wedding bells... Eleanor Schnitzer has returned to the Registrar’s Officer from educational leave and a stint in Student Services as an Academic Advisor. Kudos... Assessment Officer Georgina Ferguson spent three wonderful weeks in Chile travelling the countryside and visiting art galleries and museums. She recommends Chile as a holiday destination for anyone. And Cathy Gibney of the Registrar’s Office returned from a trip to the Emerald Isle (Ireland) where she spent time visiting family and friends. Bruce is section leader of the baritones in Diane Loomer’s popular- prize winning men’s choir Chor Leoni. See you in July! 1
