INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / APRIL 11, 1989 A A Tj AINE PLM AAA Se A BES Sw LA SR et Pa TE Te Ta TR President’s Report Continued On February 24, the Provincial/ Peer Tutor Conference was held at Douglas. This conference involves teachers and student volunteers who work with students in secon- dary schools who have physical disabilities. This was the first such conference, and involved students and teachers from all over the province. I felt that it was an honour for Douglas College to be chosen as the venue of the con- ference, and indicated a recognition of the useful work the college is doing in this field. INTERNAL MATTERS - GENERAL A Step Three grievance of the Douglas/K wantlen Faculty Associa- tion has now been resolved. During February, the Education- al Leave Committee completed its work and reported to me. I have ac- pted its recommendation, and have confirmed that Educational Leave will be granted to Blair Fisher, Gary Parkinson, and Ian Joyce. Their proposals were of high quality, and elicited commen- dation from the review committee. BCGEU negotiations are ongo- ing, and negotiations with the Douglas/Kwantlen Faculty Associa- tion are expected to begin next week. The week of March 13, was the Douglas College Foundation week. It involved a number of events high- lighting the work of the Douglas College Foundation and the Douglas College Alumni Associa- tion, in furthering the cause of Douglas College students and the Douglas College/Community Relationship. Highlights of the week involved "President for the @:” Contest" - Jackie Gresko ac- ing as President, while I laboured in the Arts and Humanities vineyard; a Flea Market/Bake Sale which yielded over $2,000 in profits which will be matched; a Career Fair involving 30 fee-paying exhibitors; an Awards Night, at which $30,000 was distributed to 100 recipients; and a special benefit performance of Inherit the Wind. The entire week was a smashing success, and a tribute to the work of dozens of volunteers, as well as that of Randi Duke, Community Resource Development Officer, staff persons Phyllis Johnson and Cathy Daminato, and the hard working boards of the College Foundation and the College Alumni Association. Our men’s and women’s basket- ball teams have won the B.C. Colleges Championships, and are playing in Alberta for the Canadian title. Two members of our Douglas Royals Hockey team have been named to the All Canadian College team, and one member each of our men’s and women’s basketball teams have also been named to the All Canadian teams. I would like to draw the atten- tion of the Board to the "Five in the Foyer" Art Exhibit. The exhibitors are the volunteer directors of the Art Exhibition Committee. All of them are working local artists. The show is well worth viewing in the Theatre Foyer and in the Display Room, 3rd floor north. I would also like to draw to the attention of the Board, the play Inherit the Wind - the major theatre produc- tion this spring. The topic is timely, and the technical and artis- tic quality of the production is very good. W.L. Day
