“Other EntertainmeNrt— Live music lives By Lori Donald upport your local musicians! Forget discos. You can get all the top for- ty you can swallow on the radio. Go see real live people play real live mus- ic. Like Amanda Hughes, for instance. If you haven’t seen her, do yourself a favour, go see her show at the Venue on March 6-7. She sings a wide var- iety of original and cover tunes from Janis Joplin to the Police to Souixie and the Ban- shees. In her strong, soulful voice she can croon, holler and wail with the best of them. And best of all, you can dance to it! I’ve hurt myself dancing to this band so be warned. They’re so good you won't want to sit still. Wondering what to do tonight? Go see Poisoned at Club Soda. Poisoned is one of the best bands Vancouver has ever produ- ced. See them before they hit the big time and play horrible places like the Coliseum Concert Bowl. Poisoned plays all original tunes that are passionate, exciting and in- tellegent, a rare and wonderful combina- Other Press tion. Lead singer and songwriter Art Berg- mann has a strangely compelling stage pre- sence. A friend of mine said that he looks like a cross between Bill the Cat and Keith Richards. It is difficult to take your eyes off him. You never know what he is going to do or say next. His between song patter alone is worth the price of admission. See them! Live music doesn’t get much better than this. Rock is not your style, you say? Well go see Skywalk at Club Soda on March 9-11. This jazz fusion band us hot and getting hotter all the time. Their US tours have been phenomenally popular as is their first album “Silent Witness” and their even better al- bum “The Bohemians”. Don’t like jazz, you say? Go see Skywalk anyway. They’ll change your mind. Individually all the members of the group are top rate music- ians. Collectively, they’re amazing. Get to the club early. Skywalk has a large following of devoted fans. I have yet to see a Skywalk show that hasn’t been packed full of people who know every song and scream for their favorites. Get out to see what Vancouver musicians have to offer. Hond- Severed ricaus up fron wld SEVERED HEADS “Come Visit the Big Bigot” (Nettwork) - w ! FRONT 242 “Agressive/Quite Unusual’ (12”) (Nettwork) Reviewed by Richard Two records from two very electronic, progressive industrial dance bands. Front 242 from Brussels and Severed Heads from Australia and both on Vancouver’s Nett- work record label. Says Ellard (vocals, Severed Heads), “Severed Heads are a reaction against the Australian underground. The aussie un- derground is totally different. ‘Swamp guitar’ is somewhat more pronounced than over here (in Vancouver), like DMC and the lot. The Hoodoo Guru’s have done for the Australian underground what Skinny Puppy have done to the Canadian under- ground. They’ve cleaned it up, made it more palatable and they’ve marketed it, but we fight back. We hate this ‘swamp guitar’ thing. It’s just not on! Severed Heads at- tack with full force: layers upon layers of computerized music along with heavy vocal ‘distortion, reverbs and digital delays. They combine (on stage) this with synthetic nr wares, video synths (actual video images constructed through computer to video screens during the course of the show via Stephen Jones), but don’t exhibit much au- dience interaction or feedback. ee “Severed Heads are out to decapitate the Australian underground with their special brand of 16 _ track-gizmo-electro-video- filmo-techno-blah, blah, blah...Paul Hogan and Alice Cooper eat your heart out. There’s more to life than Bruce Springsteen. (Cercan Volumn, issue 4).” Front 242 on the other hand don’t wish to change the entire musical world’s attitude toward _industrial-music-filmo-blah, _ blah, blah...they just wanna illustrate though their medium the violence and ironic horror we all face, and use music and sound as a method of approaching the pub-lic. Look for a full-length album sometime in the very near future. So it boils down to this: can Severed Heads and others change the way we view music and successfully alter our perceptions as to what music can be used for and combined with (re: video-computer-synth bit)?? Or are they out there in the cruel, big music world in vain, a world that ignores and con- tinues to play the boring and unartistic (7?).
