President’s Report highlights — March On March 9, Al Atkinson, Vice- President - Educational Services, and I met with Rick Pearce, Executive Director of the Fraser River Harbour Commission, to discuss relationships of the private and public sector with the New Westminster Economic Development Council. The discussion revolved around issues of conflict of interest, where public and private agencies that are members of the Council are also competing for contracts. It was a very useful discussion, which will be helpful in the future. On March 15, I participated in a panel with Devron Gaber, Director of Urban Colleges for the Ministry of Skills, Training & Labour, and Irene Lugsdin of the Federal Ministry of Human Resources. Our panel discussion related to forthcoming changes in student support, student access, and student transition to the work force. The panel discussion was part of an overall program of activity organized by the Douglas College Alumni Association - the Douglas College Career Fair. The Vice Presidents continue to meet with each other and with their divisions, in the context of reorganization. The entire month has been dominated by the organization and preparation for the Pinetree Capital Campaign. Seven formal meetings have occurred; four recruitment meetings have occurred; and a number of ad hoc meetings with Mark Crozet and staff from Navion Consultants have occurred. I am pleased to inform the Board that substantial progress has been made toward the recruitment of an overall campaign committee that will be of adequate status and stature to assure a successful campaign. On March 10, a workshop was held for members of the Douglas College Departmental and College-wide Appeals Committees. This workshop focused on the appeals policy process vis-a-vis human rights issues and legislation. The relationship between traditional “appeals” Note from the Thomas Haney Centre On March 28, Director Marian Rossell met with a Community Advisory Council struck by the Ministry of Social Services to discuss a project related to improving the delivery of education services to people with mental disabilities in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. She has also met with a Coquitlam Skills Now coordinator and the Vice Principal of Terry Fox Secondary School to pursue articulation efforts in Coquitlam. As well, Centre 2000 is examining space utilization at the Thomas Haney Centre for the Self- Employment Assistance Initiative, an HRD-funded project. # and new College-based and provincial policies relating to human rights and harassment are creating a somewhat unstable and confusing environment for institutions such as ours. All of our Vice Presidents and their staffs are well aware of the interlocking and problematic issues involved; considerable energy is being expended both in refinement and clarification of this process, as refinement and clarification of college policy. In this regard, the College has received as an institution its first complaint against Douglas College for sexual harassment of one of our male students. # Note from the Lincoln Centre Centre 2000 launched two new programs in micro-enterprise and business management. The first is the Self- Employment Assistance (SEA) program, in which unemployed people get help with preparing a business plan, and then receive formal business training. Interest in the program is high, with almost 150 attending information sessions. The second is a program to train working artists and designers in business, marketing, and management skills. It’s called Professional Practices for Artists and Designers. # Who wll b be the new Presiden at | ' Douglas College?
