October 8, 2003 Sports ¢ the other press © Double Up: Indoor Soccer Returns Patrick Kitengie [patkit@post.com] OP Contributor The battle of indoor soccer supremacy at Douglas College is back once again, as the four team league laced up on September 25 for the race to the champi- onship trophy. What makes this year special in the league is that the teams competing are much stronger than last year, even way stronger than years before. The Fockers are back and they look stronger as the team only made improvements from last year’s squad, despite losing key players like Jessica Mui and Ashley Kandert. The team seems to be determined to com- plete their quest of a repeat and will stop at nothing until they do so. An exhibition game against the new entry team Persian United exposed the Fossil weak- ness in closing out games. The Fossils were up three goals to none and still allowed Persian United to come back and tie the game to three goals apiece. Determined Fossils would not let their opponent take the lead and kept the game locked at three goals all the way to the end as they came up with the victory in the extra period to keep their winning streak alive that started since the beginning of last season. The Africans have come together in the spirit of Umoja and formed their squad—Double Up. This squad has already shown its ability to score goals, given the chance to be around the opponents red zone. During its first exhibition game, Double Up completed a lop-sided victory against the Fossils as they were the winners ten goals to one. The defense was ruthless and the back line was well-coordinated, giving goal keeper Osen the chance to rest and even converse with the referee periodically. Although Double Up has shown to be a strong team, the true test will come when they go against the Fockers and Persian United. For now they ranked first in the league as a result of the avalanche of goals they hand- ed out to the Fossils. Persian United could be this year’s surprise team if they reach the finals. Although the team is stacked with players from the regional metro league, the ques- tion still rises if they can play together in order to pull out victories. Occasionally teams with so much expe- rience seem to fall out of the race, because at the end, everybody thinks that they're the right person to make the final play and they all want to shoot the ball with- out making the extra pass. But this team is much wiser than that as they were able to come back from a 3-0 deficit and only to lose in the extra period by a gold- en goal. The friendship is there, the chemistry is there and maybe that’s all they need to make an appearance in the finals. Truly showing the experience of, one nation—one goal, one team—one soul. The Fossils, well the name says it all. This squad is made up of the school’s employee and a few students. Since last year this team has been looking at the league from bottom up. This year it might have to look at it from a different position. The addition of some stu- dents definitely gives the Fossils what they have been lacking all this time: longevity.
