We've always been located right next to a major university and close to another one,” said Atkinson. Atkinson added there may be long-term good news for Douglas College, the possibility that we may serve another new university. Studies by the Ministry of Advanced Education which recommended degree- granting at FVC also advocated another free-standing university in the Fraser Valley. Ministry decisions about the proposed university are expected by late LoS The renamed University-College of the Fraser Val- ley will begin to offer third-year classes in academic subjects in 1992, and fourth year classes in 1993. UCFYV will offer degrees in Arts and other programs yet to be finalized. Advanced Education Minister Peter Dueck has also allocated $6 million over four years to upgrade the institution’s library and other facilities, plus $1.6 million for 1992-93 student spaces. The decision to give FVC degree-granting status followed recommendations by a Ministry report sub- mitted by presidents from Fraser Valley, Kwantlen and Douglas Colleges and Simon Fraser University, plus subsequent public presentations made to the Schroeder Commission. Both reports also stressed the need for greater funding for, and accessibility to, trade and technical career programs.
