DOUG LAS COLLEGI ARCH HV ‘ES BLISSYMBOLICS What is Blissymbolics? (a) (b) (c) (a) a religion. a band from England. a musical instrument. a commmication system for people who can't speak. The answer is (ad). Blissymbolics is a visual language invented by Charles Bliss. The essential difference between Blissymbols and reading and writing is that Blissymbolics are meaning based where as the alphabet is sound based. The main advantage is that Blissymbols can be used with pre-reading children or with adults who are unable to read. You can talk to Blissymbol users even though you don't understand the actual symbols. The written word always ac- companies the symbol in order for you to understand what is being commmi- cated. There is no standard display since the symbol size, the symbol arrangement, the vocabulary selection, and the dis- play size must meet the needs, abili- ties, and interests of the user. Some Blissymbol displays are fixed to wheelchair trays; many are portable. Some displays fold to fit a carrying case. With the advancement of elec- tronic equipment, a Blissymbol dis- play with an electronic speech syn- thesizer is now available. The machine speaks the word indicated by the symbol that the user touched. Your cheery "Get Well Soon" card and all the messages helped me “keep my chin up!" The operation is over and a success - the collapsed lung seems okay and all I have to do now is get my strength back - which I'm working at. Should be back to work by April 26. Thanks again.
