ald aS DOUGLAS COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Douglas College Women's Basketball team travelled to San Diego to participate in San Diego Mesa College's 9th Annual Invitational Basketball Tournament which took place January 2 - 4, 1987 The Douglas College Women’s team was the only Canadian team entered. The rest were from California, with one team from Arizona. In the first round of the eight team tournament, the Royals met Santa Monica, California. Douglas College blew out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back as they coasted fo a 73- 44 win. Lorraine Marken lead the Royals with |5 points while Kim Phipps had 13 and Jo Ann Taylor and Ethel Atte each contributed 10 points. In the second round, the Royals faced off with College of the Desert (from the Palm Springs area). C.O.D. was the team to beat in the tournament as they were lead by two very effective scorers despite double and sometimes triple teaming efforts by the Royals. Six foot Dirolyn Scherow sunk 18 and 20 foot jump shots with ease and eventually scored 43 points to lead C.O. D. over Douglas 81-72. The Royals full-court pressed the entire game but only got as close as five points late in the con- test. Jo Ann Taylor lead the Royals with 24 points followed by Kim Phipps with 14. In the final game which was for third place, the Royals came out flat, which was to be expected after the tremen- dous effort of the previous day, and were quickly down 22-12 against Mesa College of Arizona. By half-time the score was 38-29 for Mesa as Douglas College still couldn't find the groove. Royals dropped their press for the second half (several players already had three fouls) and relied on their fast break or, failing that punched it inside to their bigger forwards. The strategy worked and the Royals scor- red 55 points in the second half to win 84-69. Leading scorers for Douglas College were Rosyin Bowers with 23 points, Kim Phipps with 21 points, and Loretta Isaak and Andrea Jackson with nine points a piece. Jo Ann Taylor was named to the tournament All-Star Team. Kim I : Phipps, Andrea Jackson and Lorraine Marken also had good performances throughout the tournament. On Friday, January 9th, the Douglas College Women Royals Basketball team met Malaspina for the second time in league play. Although the Lady Mariners managed to stay close for the first ten minutes (22-15 in favour of Douglas College), they could not run with the Royals for long and trailed 50 - 22 at the half. The Douglas College Royals came out strong in the second half, fast breaking at every opportunity and outscoring the Mariners 52-18 to win 102-40. Top scorers for Douglas were Ethel Atte with I8 points, Jo Ann Taylor scoring |4 and Lorraine Marken, Roslyn Bowers, Brenda Cope and Kim Phipps with 13, 12, 12 and |! points respectively.
