MAD HATTER 12° The Samarinda Forestry Vocational Training Center Project (SFVIC) The SFVIC Project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency as part of Canada's development assistance to Indonesia. The program is implemented in conjunction with the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower. Since 1983, the B.C. Ministry of (Post-Secondary) Education has administered Phase 2 of this project from Victoria. Under this phase, Canadian advisors on two to three year contracts set up classrooms and shops in an existing Indonesian college, developed programs and advised Indonesian instructors in the following areas: industrial electronics; carpentry; sawfiling; pipefitting and millwrighting. Training was also provided in B.C. for Indonesian instructors selected from the Samarinda College. In the upcoming year a program of in-plant training will be introduced to the Samarinda area and will be run by a Canadian Field Manager out of the Indonesian college. Under this program, short-term advisors from Canada will work with Indonesian college instructors to develop and deliver tailor-made vocational/technical training courses for industry. It is planned that these courses will be delivered in the local plants, using plant machinery and supplies. Courses are also planned for delivery in a number of small. satellite training centres in the Kalimantan area. The site for this training project is Samarinda, Kalimantan, a river port located 1/2 a degree off the equator on the Mahakam River, three hours drive from the ocean. The area is low-lying, covered in sparse jungle, humid and hot. Candidates short-listed for selection will receive detailed information on the site, project and conditions as part of the selection process.
