Up until the Capilano Tournament, the Royals have had a measure of success in exhibition games and scrimmages. What rule of measure they are using is yet to be determined. The Royals met the Kwantlen Eagles in the first round. Early foul trouble put the team at a disadvantage. Big men Cody Berg and Tim Powers, team Captain Cole Bernie and guard Mike Kim all sat on the bench with two fouls a piece for the remainder of the first half. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that McGilligan’s boys need to learn how to keep their hands to themselves. Despite the foul trouble and “sporadic play” as McGilligan put it, the Royals went into half-time only down by nine points. Mike Kim came out gunning in the second half scoring 15 points. The Royals kept it close and even tied it but undisciplined technical fouls shifted momentum to the Eagles. Kwantlen won the preliminary game 71-60. McGilligan remained positive about the game. “It is difficult this early in the year but the guys are starting to execute the offense and | think that when that happens we are going to be pretty good,” says Coach McGilligan. Douglas finished the tournament strong beating the host team, Capilano Blues for fourth place. Cody Berg’s 18 point contribution led them to a 70-59 victory over the Blues. Berg was a force in the middle averaging 19 points per game throughout the tour- nament. He was “sensational” says McGilligan and he used the same compliment for guard Nick Hope, who played well in the final game. The team is now looking ahead to a tour- nament in Kamloops at the University College of the Cariboo. Their first round game will be against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. ae Page 18 e http://www.otherpress.ca Ain elas aes IS HIRING!
