Online tutoring service a new reality A new year brings new opportunities for student success. Starting in January, the Learning Centre is launching a new online tutoring service for students, with support from Client and Learning Services. “The pilot stage of the project is over and we are now ready to offer convenient online tutoring services to students who need help developing strong writing skills,” says Cecil Klassen, Learning Centre instructor. Students can access this support either through myDouglas or from the Learning Centre website. Students email a writing project and an online tutor reviews and responds with comments within 48 hours. Tutors will also use online tools such as private wiki pages to give feedback. This technology allows students to read the tutor’s comments in their web browser. “Plagiarism is one of the major reasons for offering an in-house online tutoring service for writing,” says Klassen. “Faculty know that students can pay for, and get too much help from many places, including the Internet. The Learning Centre offers a free service using peer tutors who are trained specifically to counteract plagiarism. Tutors provide input as informed readers January 16 Literature Alive presents Métis Playwright Marie Clements. 11am, Room 1606. New Westminster Campus.
